I have been working at Barclays Capital as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Not sure...just like any other work place with politics

    Cons

    Poor management skills within staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your staff to be able to manage people and just not shove people under poor management skills...you will get disgruntled staff.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

good brand name and history and core of strong relationships. has been a growing platform but now this is restricted to certain business areas.

    Cons

continually changing strategy, high degree of politics, lots of pressure and long working hours (all the latter two complaints are general industry problems).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick with one strategy rather than changing with every set of results. back winning businesses.

I have been working at Barclays Capital as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Everyone was very happy to make time to spend at least half an hour with me. I would say that the people at Barclays are all very friendly and helpful. During the internship, there were a lot of networking sessions organised for us as well.

    Cons

No cons that I can think of.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Barclays Capital is still being considered a good name in the street, so it is good to have it on your CV when going to interview somewhere else. And base salaries are still good.

    Cons

Since Barclays' CEO announced major redundancy plans, including 30% in investment banking until 2016, people stopped working. It is difficult to find a person keen to develop business. The majority spends more time discussing who else is hiring, who is a good headhunter, who will be fired next etc. You feel very low morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the management decides to cut personnel, it should just do it rather than telling people thet they will be kicked to the street gradually in large numbers. It is maybe a good news for shareholders but very bad for motivation.

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

They pay more than some of the other banks.

    Cons

The leadership changes its mind about the direction of the company almost weekly. There is no guarantee that your work will ensure that you continue to be employed there. It seems like each month there is a new "townhall" meeting with one of the very senior mgmt people telling us what the new "corporate slogan" is. Overall it leads to a strong feeling that no one has any idea where things are going. Quite depressing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont fire half your people and then re-hire them 5 months later. Have a consistent plan for the company and share it with everyone. Dont change your slogan ad-hoc in response to the media. When you say that you value your employees show them by treating them like people, not pets.

I have been working at Barclays Capital as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Friendly working environment. Most of the senior people very approachable. A lot of emphasis on teamwork. They really care about your career development.

    Cons

The bank is going through a lot of changes now. Maybe not the best place if you are looking for stability.

    Pros

    Some nice people.
    Nice building.

    Cons

It's gotten too large for it's infrastructure.
It's culture has changed drastically over the years, for the worse.
Not competitive in compensation with other banks.
    Little opportunity for career advancement.
    Lacked product scope.
    Lacked diversity in senior management.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Lots of in-house learning opportunities and regular seminars hosted by the business. A strong culture of working across different teams. People were very motivated and passionate about the firm. This was the Bob Diamond era.

    Cons

Timescales for project delivery in IT were very tight with the expectations that you will did whatever it took to get the work done. Forced ranking was in place during my time, which meant some people had to be in the bottom quarter. This quarter were always in danger of losing their jobs when redundancies were announced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

During my time in one of the business aligned IT groups it was felt people weren't always promoted on their merit, expertise and experience.
