Pros
Work culture is great compared to other banks and the environment is also great for software developers. I have worked with three different teams and all have been satisfactory.
Cons
I have not found much downside of the firm, yet. However, there are some issues with the internal mobility. One might find it hard to move internally once you get in.
Pros
Relatively low pressure
Some interesting projects
Variety of technologies
Nice people
Cons
Management has very little vision
British companies place very little value in people except at highest levels in organization
Don't expect any assistance in advancing your career. Don't belive in claims that there is tuition assistance - non-existent.
Advice to Senior Management
Must do better at rewarding people so that they want to stay.
Pros
The people I work with are good folks.
Cons
Long hours are expected while compensation is poor. Very gossipy.
Advice to Senior Management
Emphasize and reward teamwork.
Pros
Travel, Experience, Products, Fairly Decent People.
Cons
Bonus structure. Work life Balance, Can be cut throat Environment.
Advice to Senior Management
Be fair.
Pros
- Reasonable compensation.
- Access to a number of very smart people.
- Good benefits compared to competing firms.
- A very good balance between family life and work life.
Cons
- Morale is poor in some areas of the firm.
- At times, there is an in-congruence between internal news about our success and what we see externally.
Pros
Great people
Great place to learn the business
Cons
promotion process isn't clear enough and leaves a lot of uncertainty if you will/will not be promoted
Advice to Senior Management
promotion process needs improvement
Pros
Good structure; nice hr; good exposure
Cons
not very involving in daily jobs, maybe due to seperating from the team
Advice to Senior Management
bureaucracy quite significant
Pros
Barclays Capital has a very planned-out internship program where they promote networking, getting involved, learning about the business, and expanding your knowledge base. There are many activities that get you involved with the company and the people. It is a fast-paced environment where you are always learning. The training program is very good as well.
Cons
Software support and requests are slow. Your experience may vary based on the group that you are placed into. Whether you will be working long hours or a typical 9 to 5 all depends on the type of manager/team you have. The type of work you do also vary from team-to-team. Some teams are less engaging than others.
Advice to Senior Management
Give the Technology Division more recognition for their work. They are the backbone of the company.
Pros
paid maternity leave, decent benefits and 401k
Cons
there is no work life balance.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your people
Pros
Great people, who are by and large motivated and seeking excellence. Also, Bob Diamond's "no jerk policy" seems to be taken very seriously with Barclays legacy employees as well as former Lehman ones.
Cons
Constructive criticism was not really present. Over an extensive review period, I learned very little about what areas I needed to improve on.
Advice to Senior Management
Give better, well-thought criticism to interns. The room to grow was limited because of this lack of communication and carelessness in the review process.
