I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I had a great experience for the three years I was there, I had a great support system but ultimately felt that I grew out of my role and needed to experience something else

    Cons

Company is going through a tough transition and talent continues to leave the firm for other opportunities; ultimately I chose to do the same

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train and support the junior team; ultimately mid-level and senior executives did not provide much growth opportunity and people have looked to go elsewhere

    I worked at Barclays Capital

    Pros

Some really good people (but decreasing). Relatively relaxing work place. Layoffs not bad recently (as enough people are leaving on their own)

    Cons

Pay. Pay decreasing. Turnover large. No longer an IB. Run by credit card people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to keep the few good people you have left

    I worked at Barclays Capital

    Pros

The opportunity to learn and network with experienced industry leaders. Also, the name of the firm gives you the opportunity to go other places as well.

    Cons

The political aspect of the firm, which is present in many other firms and industry's and can help you continue further into your career

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Those professionals left standing are, for the most part, hard working, intelligent and consciencious. They do attempt to provide quality service to their clients across the full spectrum of financial products. They have a massive footprint in almost every market globally and their aren't many things they cannot transact as a bank.

    Cons

Senior management is terrified of public perception. It almost felt as if they'd rather have happy headlines than happy employees and stock holders. Morale is awful. Barclays did not grow organically in the United States post the Lehman acquisition. The result of that has been 6 years of purges and downsizes and business realignments. Barclays wants to be the biggest and has lost sight of the fact that its more important to be the best at a few things than very mediocre in everything. Compensation, by all acounts, is 20-30% lower than counterparts at other similar shops.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Pretty good work/life balance, all things considered (no crazy hours like investment banking). When I worked there, there was overtime for analysts so that was a great form of compensation. I made a lot of good friends at Barclays.

    Cons

This is not a prestigious job. You are working in the back office of an investment bank. You're not working with Ivy League graduates with MBAs. If you're okay with this, then you'll be fine. It's very hard to be in this group and then switch to a front office role...but in rare cases, it happens.
