I worked at Barclays Capital full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I worked on the trading floor in a sales support capacity and finally in a sales seat. I was never bored or wanting for a challenge. The people around me were energetic and entrepreneurial in nature. I was always surrounded by a stimulating buzz of activity.

    Cons

You have to enjoy working with aggressive, hard-charging people. Work-life balance can be out of whack unless you are extremely talented at your role and managing yourself and those around you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You cannot change people's core values by sending them to classes. You must hire those who live the values and discipline those who do not. Above all, if the vast majority of your managers do not adhere to the company values (known internally by the acronym "RISES") and put them ahead of profits, then the ongoing repair of the company's damaged reputation will fail in the long run.

Aggressive, entrepreneurial shop that became too political. Lehman was the nail in the coffin.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

As long as one is politically connected, one can coast for a long, long time here.

    Cons

The ex-Lehman mentality has destroyed a once admirable shop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire everyone who came from Lehman.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Depends on the division, but they are a global brand, which always helps mobility.

    Cons

Management was ineffectual, not the brightest tools in the shed.
The HR function is token and not attuned to the needs of employees.

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nothing that I can think of. Started talking about exit from day 1.

    Cons

MD hired knowing he would be firing soon because he accidentally introduced permanent staff as contingency that internally referred to contract folks.

Good professional opportunities but the firm is falling behind the leading investment banks.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Global investment bank so it provides opportunities to work across the globe. Good and balanced blend of legacy Barclays and legacy Lehman employees plus new hires since 2008. Good work-life/vacation time.

    Cons

The lives of the majority of the employees were encumbered by an expensive and time-consuming rebranding and reengineering of the firm's culture that had suffered because of the missteps of a small number of key employees. That lead to lack of focus on producing. Morale is at new lows.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While attempting to incorporate positive long-term values current senior management seems really only focused on the results from the next quarter. They drive lay-offs and departmental reorganizations that are a huge distraction. There is no clear strategy regarding the investment bank.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are a lot of very able, hard working people at the Firm who really know what they are doing. It is such a shame that there is so much wasted talent. Department management realizes that morale is at an all time low and does what they can to offer perks that they are permitted to offer. Work life balance is decent.

    Cons

The employees who actually do know what they are doing at the firm are not promoted, paid or recognized for their hard work. In fact there is no recognition for hard work or going above and beyond for any of the employees in infrastructure. Compensation is poor. Morale is the lowest it has ever been. There is very little faith in the current company management and CEO. Current employees often feel as if they are paying for mistakes others made in the past. Management appears to be satisfied with status quo and affecting any change is very difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overhaul senior management at the Firm. Recognize individuals who perform. You can't instill culture and values at a Firm that was lacking them to begin with.

I have been working at Barclays Capital as a contractor

    Pros

    Great coworkers and colleagues
    Friendly teams
    The pay
    Hours, mostly 8.30 to 5 or 5.30
    Process oriented

    Cons

Lack of quality projects - many projects involve around Lehman infrastructure
    Outdated infrastructure and network
Horrible middle management - just wants to make them look good
Have contract staff do all the heavy lifting while permanent do 'ssupervision'
    Very top heavy
Not accepting of ideas or new approaches
    Hate the floor seating..
No sense of permanency even for permanent staff
