I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

So much talent, it's amazing to work with such wonderful people. The company was a true melting pot of individuals and backgrounds but everyone came together to focus on achieving the goals that were set. Pay was fair and the flexibility around time off was more than generous.

    Cons

Long days, especially outside of the UK. Management in certain areas tends to not appreciate their people and fail to give credit where credit is due. There has been a wholesale shift in the corporate belief system in an attempt to appease the UK press. Sadly, the result of this has been a changing of the guard with senior leadership. Many of the original Barclays Capital leaders have been exited from the organization and are being replaced with Retail Bank personnel. Morale is at an all time low given the number and frequency of redundancies. It's a challenging work environment when you're constantly looking over your shoulder and wondering if this is the round where you are exited. Due to the challenging financial culture, management in technology seems to be focused more on hitting budget numbers than setting a strategy and leading their people. In recent times, it felt as though more effort was being spent on audit remediation than building the strongest product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget to say thank you. Be honest with your people. Set a strategy and LEAD. Remove layers of bureaucracy. Give your people the tools and training to succeed.

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

growth opportunities, good local management, centralized IT systems, focus on training within some departments, focus on mobility within departments, unofficial writing on the wall to hire internally displaced staff when outsourcing

    Cons

Centralized decision making sitting in London delaying approvals, massive offshoring plans, while they have an unofficial 'no-jerks' policy there are quite a few people that could be only classified as that and still prospering, inter-regional conflicts of interest always settled in London interest irrespective of what is good for the bank, focus on being seen as demonstrating the right values versus ingraining them into your daily work-life, implicit suggestion that career progression can only occur if you relocate to off-shoring location

I worked at Barclays Capital as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Pleasant working environment and colleagues, job is easy to understand and straight forward, not too many politics

    Cons

Management communication wasn't transparent then as it was during the financial crisis. Because of the insecurity, there were a lot of staff movement and unnecessary doubts/fears among colleagues.

Culture is slightly flamboyant and showy. even though salary isn't as high to support such a lifestyle. Always remember to remain grounded

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clarity in communicating broader strategies, even if it means bad news

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Talented colleagues, good initial salary, focus on training and improving employees' skills, flexible working time, good projects to learn. Used to be a good firm

    Cons

    - Firing is massive which demotivates people. Hopeless strategies for IB. bad salary increment, no bonus regardless of performances. No work life balance, difficult to get promoted, inefficient software development processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring and firing people. have long term strategies.
