    Pros

Friendly people, supportive management. There were significant opportunities for professional development as an analyst

    Cons

extremely high turnover and lack of continuity...recent scandals didn't help. It's unclear where the US operations and the future of the investment banking branch are heading.

    Advice to Management

Make One Barclays a Reality instead of just a mantra

    Pros

The building was really nice, The salary was very competitive. Benefits were good. There were no set hours. I was given work and given a lot of freedom to do it. The system was well designed and there were plenty of smart people. The atmosphere was pretty good.

    Cons

My boss did not want to be bothered and sometimes would not answer emails. Some of the problems that occurred in the system were really tough to solve and not reproducible and no help was given. My team and colleagues were friendly but I rarely went out to lunch or after work with them. Typical drones. I was laid off after a year and a half. They have had some rough times and laid off tens of thousands of people. People were really nervous when lay off were happening.

    Advice to Management

    Be better leaders and mentors.

    Pros

Pretty good work/life balance, all things considered (no crazy hours like investment banking). When I worked there, there was overtime for analysts so that was a great form of compensation. I made a lot of good friends at Barclays.

    Cons

This is not a prestigious job. You are working in the back office of an investment bank. You're not working with Ivy League graduates with MBAs. If you're okay with this, then you'll be fine. It's very hard to be in this group and then switch to a front office role...but in rare cases, it happens.

  7. Helpful (1)

Continuation of silos. The firm decided to "horizontalize" but also decided to adopt nepotism.

    Pros

There are still pockets of well intentioned IT leaders, but I suspect not for long.

    Cons

All IT strategy and direction is moving to London forcibly. So, you can consider this a PRO if you are in London.

    Advice to Management

Trust is a very valuable asset to hand off to someone with little accountability.

    Pros

Great group of people, real team environment, treat you like and adult and if you are loyal to them, they will be loyal to you

    Cons

Recently cleaned house. What is left is very different than the old Lehman Brothers. Very little opportunity to move up and the pay sucks since Anthony Jenkins took over as CEO. Also the review process is a joke.

    Pros

working in NY, remote from head office politics in London

    Cons

Senior mgmt hasn't a clue, a wildly top heavy organization. I would not recommend joining barclays

    Advice to Management

office culture is poison, there are no training opportunities.

    Pros

Really care about the people that work here. Analysts get meaningful responsibility and get put on major deals the moment they walk in. They will work you, but you'll get a good experience.

    Cons

The hours are fairly long for an investment banking analyst. This is pretty standard in the industry and remains the key issue as there's no way around that.

    Advice to Management

Should be more cognizant of analysts' times. The benefits and perks are decent to an extent but there needs to be more focus on streamlining work.

    Pros

This was before 2012 so things might have changed: Good networking opportunity, A lot of social events for junior employees, Used to be a fast growing business, Used to be a less bureaucratic place.

    Cons

Very "process driven" More external interference

    Advice to Management

Reward good people regardless of external influence
