Management does not care about work life balance and your career is determined by managers' internal politics

    Pros

Can provide a decent (not great) learning platform

    Cons

incumbent people, politics, blatant disregard of anyone below management and low pay despite tough working conditions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Smart driven people in front office functions
    Good work life balance

    Cons

Like most banks heavily hampered by new regulation
Some people in support roles (middle/back office) can be difficult to work with - uncooperative, unmotivated, restricted by policies and procedures
Systems are bad, getting better, but very slowly

OK place to work to get mobile application development experience.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I work in the technology center in Plano, TX. If you want Mobile development experience on android and iOS phone/tablet, this is the place to go. Be aware that 90% of the development staff and 100% of the management staff are Indian, as Shygan brought over his entire management team from Verizon when he got the job as CTO at Barclays, and they brought over all their friends.

    Cons

No promotion potential if you work in the technology center in Plano, TX. If you have a burning need to feel that you are part of a team, this is not the place to be. The Indian management team has their favorites, and most meetings are conducted in their native language (not English). But if you are OK working solo, and you are agressive enough to get your questions answered so you can do your job, the mobile dev experience will help you move up in terms of your career path with another company. Also, be aware that the CTO Shygan recently departed, and their are rumors that the US tech center may be shut down by the parent company in England.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you intend to keep the Plano Technology center open in the US, take a hard look at replacing some of the management team that Shygan brought over with a few American's. Meetings and technical discussions should be conducted in English, and time allowed for translation to those team members who may not have as good an understanding of English. Conducting technical meetings in another language makes it hard for those non-Indian team members to participate and to do their jobs.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible working hours. Able to manage work from home very regularly. Good pay which may be in line with companies like Citi or Morgan.

    Cons

Senior management is not too strong. You don't get too much paid even if you work 15 hours a day. Simply they will add 7 to 10k bonus more for your extra efforts. so its not really worth to spend too much of time for less than 1000$ amount every month perhaps do what you can in your 8 hours. Very conservative management and company is not a pay master but you will get good pay but not too good or excellent pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sr management should treat hard working staff properly not with extra 5k more bonus.

    Pros

Good work life balance, decent compensation, really a meritocracy so if you know you stuff and you know how to relay it, you will do well.

    Cons

Like all big companies, there is some bureaucracy you need to deal with. This is being reduced so hopefully that hurdle will be eliminated soon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to work to reduce hurdles to getting real work done.

I worked at Barclays full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I found it to be a meritocracy, fairly good management, not as aggressive/ competitive as some other large shops. Very smart people and team was always willing to provide support. They have a push towards training. You get out what you put in. If you truly have a desire to rise to the top and are willing to make personnel sacrifices then you will be able to. Fairly good benefits. the new CEO seems very values driven and is ethical.

    Cons

It is unstructured so many become disgruntled if they are used to a very precise and directive place. This is partly the culture. There is very high turnover, at least in NYC. I think this is due to the competition for top talent. You are only as good as your last months performance so you have to have an A game at all times. Like any place, it depends on who you are working for. I had a couple great managers who I reported to. A few others I would have been miserable. Competition on the street is fierce, layoffs always hang overhead but this is the same everywhere. Don't work at an investment bank if you expect to ride it out for 20 years on easy street.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A little more clarity on what it takes to be a top performer. It is kind of like a black box.

    Pros

Growing company - part of global bank; salaries high with respect to peers; good work life balance

    Cons

career advancement opportunities limited - stagnation at middle management level (AVP)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

give adequate opportunities for employee career advancement;try to look beyond one-partner dependencies (organic growth, M&A etc.)
