I worked at Barco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people with whom to work. Chance to travel. Working for a European company is interesting. Products are used in interesting ways. Nice physical location.

    Cons

Working for a European headquartered company (all decisions come from there and sometimes our opinion is not solicited). I worked with just a very few REALLY BAD APPLES - and nothing was done to change their behavior. The cool place to work is too open - very, very, very hard to focus / concentrate. Sometimes too much travel.

    Advice to Management

Invest more fully in your new businesses. Your expectations are completely unreasonable given that you are penetrating new markets and new distribution channels. Spend money to make money.

I worked at Barco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great industry reputation Great facility Great people Nice diversity Located in Rancho Cordova, CA amid several other high tech companies Company communucates well with stakeholders Site offers fun events for employees

    Cons

Employees work too hard without relief Expectations impossible to meet with time, systems and human resource constraints Demand required don't match rewards Outdated, ineffective performance appraisal Too much hierachy, too many levels in decision-making Corporate control, rigid and slow Some system processes overly complex Everything controlled and on intranet, but not archived, making poor search results

    Advice to Management

Upper management seems well intended. Trust your lower level managers and employees to make decisions. Sites should not have harsh impacts of huge delays in corporate response times. Simplify. Simplify. That said, everyone there is doing their best. May the company continue improving and be successful.

    Pros

Smart, dedicated people. Good products.Good benefits and vacation policy. If a problem develops everybody strives to get it fixed. Occasional trips to Europe.

    Cons

Uber politics. There seems to be a standard where the US operations are held accountable, but European operations are not. No cohesive strategies between divisions. The motto of the Belgians is the title of this review.

    Advice to Management

Not applicable, they are not going to change any way.

I worked at Barco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting to work for a European headquartered company. Benefits are pretty good. The overall workplace is fairly nice, depending on which business unit for which you work. The CEO is smart and has really turned the company around. His policies make sense for the most part.

    Cons

Headquarters can sometimes insert a heavy hand. Local management is hit-or-miss and the company has more to do to remove the silos among the different business units so that the customers are not affected.

    Advice to Management

There is little or no pathway for career growth. They give lip service to work-life balance but there is little actually done to assist with this, at least in North America.

  7. Good people, ineffective upper management!

I have been working at Barco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fairly stable (for now), relaxed environment. Work can be interesting, most people are nice. Work life balance is good and their very flexible. It's really not a bad place to work, all in all.

    Cons

Meaningless review system, no career path, forget about promotions, very draconian guidelines for moving to the next level, even if your manager ever talked about them (which they don't). The raises are poor, barely more than inflation. Seems to have lots and lots of layers of ineffective management. Senior management never replaces anyone when they leave, do more with less mentality. I guess they fear having to layoff, which is understandable, but that is what contractors are for.

    Advice to Management

Learn the difference between cultures in regard to what your employees expectations are, and you'll be more competitive. The world is not Europe. Don't just insert a warm body into a role, when someone quits. People can't perform 5 different jobs and still be effective.

I worked at Barco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the smartest people I've ever worked with! The company culture is friendly and there is a lot that you learn working here.

    Cons

Dealing with upper management was always a challenge. Instead of hiring more employees, management continues to put on more jobs to their existing employees, making it difficult for employees to do their actual job.

    Pros

Many opportunities for growth and learning. We make some truly cool products!

    Cons

There is a disconnect between the US and Belgium. Working to resolve those differences can be tough as a lot of the time it's hard to figure out who really has the final say.

    Advice to Management

Decide who is in charge and who will have the final say, just to set expectations up front.
