    Pros

The benefits and pay are good. As long as you're not in a management or leadership role the work/life balance is good.

    Cons

Senior leadership are arrogant, ultra-conservative and very stuffy. They set high goals but don't take the time to implement them properly.

    Pros

Very employee friendly company almost to a fault. Very little if any micro-managing . Empowered all its employees to think outside the box

    Cons

Very liberal attendance policy handcuffed management at times. Company slow at times making decisions in all areas of the company.

    Advice to Management

None- Senior management made some very hard well thought out decisions that were necessary during the recession. Was a good run while it lasted . Thank you

  3. Sales

I worked at Barnes Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people were farily friendly across the board. The interview process was very nice and fairly quick without much delay. The product line was ok, however, when you needed something outside the catalog there were many delays and phone calls.

    Cons

When the new President was hired (the axe man) he had no emotional ties and didn't really care about the people. I would question his true character, however, his motives were clear...$$. Reduce salaries and try to convince everyone in the organization that the new pay structure would allow you to make more money!! Unfortunately, middle management had to deliver the news and even they didn't believe it (that was my opinion). Leadership was therefore very questionable and certainly they convinced the "share holders" this was the way to go. All promotions were shut down. Not sure how the organization is structured today.

    Advice to Management

Lead with character. Understand that flexibility is key in the field and provide middle management with the ability to make decisions if it makes sense. Soften your hard lines to gray. Understand that retention of your client base is of extreme importance and it takes more time then you allow to obtain new clients. It's a difficult economy and perhaps top leadership needs to have their salaries reduced. Treat your employees like they really matter and retention won't be a problem. Pay them well, real talent is hard to find even in this economy! Good luck.

    Pros

Freedom to work your own schedule, decent pay, some established accounts, great benefit package, FANTASTIC upper management (Regional Vice President) that cares about employees well being.

    Cons

Territories are too spread out in some states, poor website design, a lot of time spent putting up orders, the pros outweigh the cons though

    Advice to Management

It seems that management is getting younger, which in my case, is good because my new mgr (who is 29) is energized and willing to help with the hands on activities, such as taking out old bins/drawers and putting in new ones, etc.

    Pros

Not a hard job, make you own schedule

    Cons

What ever you sell its never enough. Budgets are almost unatanable.

    Advice to Management

Listen to more of the employees and make budgets an incentive to make more money and keep employees.

    Pros

Home based. Flexible hours. Good and helpful field reps.

    Cons

HORRIBLE commision structure. Very low salary. Unrealistic yearly budgets. Zero help from inside sales. Have Business Develepment Specialists("Hunters"), who are non-exsistent. Poor and outdated technology. Average wait to talk to a CS person is 20 to 30 minutes. These are people in your own company. Poor follow-up from Product Specialists if there is a problem in the field. Car and fuel allowance woeful. Spend an average of 150.00 per month out of pocket for fuel purchase

    Advice to Management

Stop short changing your sales staff. A 1 percent bonus as an incentive to make budget is laughable at best. Get with the 21st century technology wise. Increase company visability. Barnes supplies Nascar with nuts and bolts, why not use that as a selling feature?

    Pros

In the region I am in there are several talented individuals, from the reps up to the RSM. We are encouraged daily. Barnes has an extensive education and information system. They are truly concerned about their people. They want the reps to be successful, and they want us to have fun.The plan expectations can be daunting, but once you get your head around it, it's challenging and fun. I am GRATEFUL for every day I get to go to work for Barnes. This is actually the second time I have worked for Barnes. Every job has it's frustrating issues. You just have to put your head down and plow through.

    Cons

Antiquated wireless capabilities.( still better than doing it by hand!)

    Advice to Management

Design a new hire " things you'll need" package.
