Former Employee - Renewables Division (Former) in Oak Ridge, TN

I worked at Barnhart Crane & Rigging full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good company that is not a publicly traded.
    The pay is fair
Upward mobility is possible with tenure
    Strong upper management

    Cons

    Very weak middle management
4+ months of travel with no chance to come home
Travel is often to desolate areas with less than standard accommodations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be more communication between the top field employees and SENIOR management. Many cost saving solutions could be implemented with better communication.

I worked at Barnhart Crane & Rigging full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Company is innovative and does provide some unique rigging solutions

    Cons

They treat their employees poorly, have an inadequate training program and create a hostile work environment. They are one of the most expensive vendors for this type of service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting incompetent managers to positions of influence. Try to think of your employees as assets not expendable. Try working with your branches instead of creating an adversarial relationship.

I worked at Barnhart Crane & Rigging full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I believe you have to be so diversified in your skills that you do teach and learn new things and become very creative just to make things work.

    Cons

The atmosphere is that of a 3rd world culture where the Old White Guys in management, want look any female in the eyes and speak to them directly. They do not allow any woman advancement and they use all employees except select few that walk and talk and think just as they do, to make the money that the company brings in. Too many are in middle management because of being friends in the same belief system, and are totally incompetent in their jobs but all allowed to dictate to the real hard workers and if you speak up you are let go immediately. You can not win EVER! They preach one thing and totally live and behave a different way. The GOD I know would never want me or anyone to treat others as if they were beneath me. HE would always want me to love and care and treat ALL fairly!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize the people that you promote because you think they have your same thoughts and beliefs in mind.....DO NOT. They pretend and are destroying what I hope your intentions for your company really is and that is to actually help others find GOD.

I worked at Barnhart Crane & Rigging full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Barnhart Crane and Rigging is an industry leader in the rigging, heavy-lift, and transport industry. Barnhart is highly regarded as one of the most innovative companies in the rigging industry. Experience here will serve you well across many aspects of the rigging and engineering fields. Company-match 401(k) is unsurpassed, although full vesting period is after 5 years. Good luck affording investment, though.

    Cons

For one, the starting pay is abysmal. Typical BCR policy is to pay engineers below industry average, work them to death, and hopefully emerge in 5 years with a handful of battle-hardened professionals that have succumbed to their abuse. Exhaustive work and travel demands, ZERO overtime, and micromanagement galore. Expect to see incompetence rewarded, and hard work ignored. Upper management is a group of self-worshipping, elitist, hypocritical religious zealots who reward ineptitude and reward inexperienced church lackeys with great positions of management and responsibility. Company politics are paramount, and one's ability to pray (in the correct house of worship) will dictate success within the company. Expect 60+ hour work weeks, drop-of-the-hat travel requirements, and oppressive micro-management from men named Barnhart.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is completely blind to their own shortcomings. They bask in their self-perceived glory, and treat those below them with open contempt. Unfortunately, they are too blinded by their own self-righteousness to recognize an employee's value outside the church pew.

I worked at Barnhart Crane & Rigging full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Industry leader in many projects.

    Cons

They keep employees in the dark about everything. They closed our branch before the holidays with no warning, leaving projects to be incomplete.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't come in and lay off everyone right before the holidays and leave families with nothing, not the company they want you to think they are. All employees were let go, no reasoning other than the branch is moving. For the employees with Families that work to support them, you just ruined their holidays and quite possibly left some of them homeless.

    Pros

Family company that offers upward mobility. Safety oriented. Industry leader

    Cons

Poor living arrangments when on traveling assignments. Very weak and backwoods middle management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To strengthen the ability of the company weed out most of the middle management (field management)
