I worked at Barrette Outdoor Living part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed most of the team I worked with and all of the one I managed. Good days were incredible fun. I was allowed to express myself without fear. I was well compensated and recognized for a job well done. The owner, Yves Barrette, was incredibly intense and creative and a pleasure to be around.

    Cons

My manager was a micro-manager. He couldn't understand the technical side of my function so focused on the personnel side. Ultimately, since I did not appreciate the interference, this led to my departure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drop the emphasis on the pop-pychology. It's a waste of time and money. Recognize the value that every employee creates, not just the management team. Spread the wealth around a little. Learn to forgive mistakes. Focus on quality - the stuff you make is crap and you are one worthy comeptitor away from losing the 2 customers that provide most of your revenue.

I worked at Barrette Outdoor Living full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company provided a good initial training program

    Cons

You will get pulled in many different directions. I was promoted on a day I thought I would be fired and laid off on a day I thought I was to get a raise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate the old school management hierarchy and move to a flat organizational structure. Get to know people who work in the field instead of relying on mid to senior managers that are likely just reporting information that makes them look good. Encourage anonymous surveys from customers to really learn about key areas of the company to increase sales and to implement productive company wide improvements.

    Pros

Slackers get same raises as outstanding performers.

    Cons

Raises not commensurate with contributions and accomplishements. No profit sharing or bonus program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More emphasis on teamwork and cross-functional teams in particular. Compensation program that rewards individual and team achievements -- not equal raises for everyone.
