Pros
Once you get into the Union, after a six month at-will period, you're pretty much golden until the next round of layoffs comes around.
Cons
The reason there is a union is because the management has historically been unfair and completely stubborn when it comes to giving their employees anything-respect, cost-of-living pay increases, decent benefits, etc. Like any beurocracy, the only thing that matters is how long you've worked for them. Don't expect to be given any kind of recognition or promotion based on your perfromance. Everyone is jealous of the supposedly "preferrential" treatment that other departments receive, and there is absolutely zero sense of trust or comraderie at the organization. It seems like no one at the organization has any idea of what public health actually is, and it has very poor relationships with other service organizations in the area. Management is closed minded and has only their own pet solutions in mind when problem solving. The health of the community appears to be very low on their list of priorities. The pay is lower than other comparable health departments in the state of Michigan.
Advice to Senior Management
The senior management is not at all receptive to anything employees have to say, which has consistently come out in labor meetings. They are supposedly better than they were ten years ago, but that's not saying much. Second order change is badly needed at the management level because no one is interested in making it a better place to work, or a better public health service agency, for that matter.
