I worked at Barry University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people, benefits and a beautiful campus. Feels like a real community/family environment.

    Cons

Maybe increase pay for development professionals to at least meet the high cost of living in Miami and match the national average at a minimum.

I worked at Barry University full-time

    Pros

Very good benefits, time off policies and the staff were hard working, dedicated and great to work with. Generally the facilities were modern and in good condition.

    Cons

Where do I start...Senior management are mostly incompetent. Hello, get a clue when great people are leaving right and left there definitely is a problem. But instead of addressing it, they would generally bad mouth the people that left. Let's not talk about how there were no pay raises for 3 years, and yet they would spend money like they were drunken sailors. Buying something new even though they already had the same thing but it was a year or two old.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your people and get a clue that there are major problems. Give your people a raise.

I have been working at Barry University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Caring Community. Friendly and Professional Environment.

    Cons

It is tuition driven for the most part. So, resources are limited. We have too much work and not enough time to get it accomplished which at times gives the impression that we are behind and not moving forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a close look at Senior management positions. There are people in key roles that are not qualified and could hurt the University in the long run. We promote people because of long tenure and not because they are the most qualified to the job.

I have been working at Barry University

    Pros

Nice campus and small. Opportunity to get to know everyone, even though you won't want to!

    Cons

Hostile environment, lack of cooperation between divisions, always seeking to pursue personal agenda. Career growth and personal growth is very minimal and there is no unifying sense of community or teamwork.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Foster a better community.

I have been working at Barry University full-time

    Pros

Great work/life balance; friendly colleagues; strong emphasis on social justice and educating first-generation college graduates

    Cons

Senior leadership is very disorganized; salaries generally low and raises nonexistent; very few oppotunities for advancement; a lof of favoritism or cronyism

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more effort into retaining good, dedicated employees; cut the dead weight and complainers

I worked at Barry University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The values, culture, the real hard working employees at the grassroots level are wonderful. Vacation time and work/life balance are wonderful as long as you are in a job where you are not overworked or are given comp time for projects that require hours above and beyond what is considered an exempt position. Family friendly (at least when I was there).

    Cons

Tons of committees that are made up of representatives of the schools - too large to accomplish anything with usually 4 people that do all the work while the rest rant their opinion. Way too many consultants. Health Insurance was extremely expensive. There was a move towards improvement, but then Sr. Jeanne left and new leadership took over. Whereas, Sr. Jeanne was able to realize and reconcile wrong decisions, the new leadership came in with a palpable taste for nepotism and chastising. Many hard working and well respected employees left while many employees with no experience were put into leadership positions. I can't tell you how many people told me to jump ship before it sank. It is sad because although demanding prior to the administrative change, you still felt appreciated, respected and treated like an adult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Surround yourself with a team that truly wants the best for Barry, that are knowledgeable in their field, that will challenge you and lead you to make the right decisions for the betterment of students, employees and the health of the university not their own agenda or ride to retirement. You are a reflection of your team. Your team is a reflection of the university. Students and employees who are disgruntled speak the most and that is why the reputation which was growing, is going down. Yes, everyone knows Barry now and it is everywhere in FL. However, is it in the way you visioned it? There is a disconnect in mission, culture and values and how it is reflected in management.
