Proslaid back, but still gets work done

Conschanges in management led to mass terminations, not a good sign for such a large and successful company

Advice to Senior Managementprofessional discounts are squandered by the company. in-store discounts are good, however.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

I was a former manager. Loved this place!

Customer Service Manager (Former Employee)
Council Bluffs, IA

I worked at Bass Pro Shops full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe conservative attitude of the company. The people were easy to get along with. Provided uniform made getting ready easy. The store is beautiful and we took pride in keeping it clean. The customers were great! This is Candyland to them. They WANT to be there. Knowledgable staff because most of them did it part time and worked in the departments they were passionate about.

ConsThe schedule. Nights, weekends, holidays. But, it's retail. What do you expect.
Also, the pay for associates was low.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring up the base salaries a bit for associates, especially leads. We were expected to hire people with a solid background in what we were looking for, yet couldn't compete in pay.

Good for retiree or college student.

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Bass Pro Shops

ProsThe discounts are the best part about working at bass pro. 40% off store brand items and 15% off all other brands.

ConsA lot of work for a little pay. Company tries to cut down on hours/costs at expense of employees.

Poor Management

Cashier (Current Employee)
Orlando, FL

I have been working at Bass Pro Shops part-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe atmosphere of the store and its enthusiastic customers make it fun place to work. The staff are great, knowledgeable people who treat each like family. Also, you can't beat the awesome employee discount.

ConsThe fact that it's retail, your schedules are never set in stone, the hours are crazy and days are long, sometimes even too short to be worth the gas money. Management is the biggest con, they do not care about their employees and make poor choices that end up hurting their employees, rather themselves. Favoritism is very huge in this company and HR does nothing about it.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Orlando BPS needs a whole new management team.

Bad pay, bad hours, bad management

Front End Cashier (Former Employee)
Lawrenceville, GA

I worked at Bass Pro Shops part-time for less than a year

Prosgreat discounts, if you're at all interested in any of the product available.

ConsAs a part time front end associate, the hours seem to come based on who you know, get along well with, and how much hiney you kiss. There are a lot of social circles and if you're not one of the "cool kids" consider yourself expendable. Don't tick the managers off! Your hours will plummet to frightening lows, with associates hired after you getting twice what you are, and excuses like limited available hours and "you just got cut" are frequent. Regardless of how hard you work and how satisfied the customers are, if you don't fit the clique, you may as well quit. (Mind you, I can only speak for my experience with my department manager, some of the other managers were very nice and helpful)

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to how people are being treated. Forget who your worked for before you moved up and stop playing favorites. Your employees are your greatest asset, and some of them truly rely on their jobs to survive, not just to buy beer for the next frat party. Show some appreciation for those who excel, even if they didn't make #1 on the list, and do something about the problems and complaints. There's a reason you rank higher than the department managers. Take the time to put yourself in the employee's shoes. A person cannot survive on a ninety dollar paycheck.

Prosgreat store, great people to work with had a lot of fun working there.

ConsThe manager of our dept is lair and not trained in any type of management skills, HR did nothing but appease us in thinking things would change. Poor management all around.
