Pros
Great organization with a big name. People recognize Bass Pro Shops so it looks good on your resume.
Cons
Pay is sub-par, with ok benefits.
Advice to Senior Management
More feedback on job performance. It would be nice to know more about your job performance than once a year.
Pros
Interesting Products. You get to just talk to people all day which is exactly what they want you to do. They always are giving things away. Good money for what you have to do. I started at $9.00 in 2007 and now make $10.25. They really don't ask for much.
Cons
The Management is ridiculous. The store I work out was just very out of touch with the staff the department managers are good but the store managers are out of it. Other then that people sometimes come in there just to find someone to talk to and you have no other choice but to listen to these people problems or ideas.
Advice to Senior Management
Stock your stores with products that are relevant to the area. There is no reason that you can't look at the surrounding markets and cater the stores more specifically to those areas.
Pros
The job was easy to perform. Opportunities for multilingual experiences were omnipresent. Hours are flexible. Location with Gurnee Mills is optimal.
Cons
Salaries should have been more competitive. Lighting in the parking lot is inadequate. I often did not feel comfortable walking out to the parking lot by myself at night.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve the lighting in the parking lot. Provide more accountability for those individuals who habitually arrive late to work. Provide benefits to the workers.
Pros
Great employee discount and hours are flexible during slow months. You are considered family when you work with this company. Highly motivated company.
Cons
Downside to being in sales is that there are no incentives for sales people. Training is seldom. Overall very little downtime in the high season.
Pros
Flexible hours, pay was a little better than some other retail, interesting place to work at times, great discount of 40%, weekly paycheck
Cons
If you don't look like you belong there then you are treated differently by management.
They have a tendency to hire to many people so your hours will be cut short and hours vary greatly from week to week
Advice to Senior Management
Need to recognize employees for having great sales or providing fair treatment for all employees and don't hire too many new employees so that hours are cut.
Pros
Great discount, the store smells good, there are a lot of fun people who work there.
Cons
NO communication or job feedback. It was like I always felt I was missing something or that there was some secret I wasn't in on. I had a hard time feeling confident about working.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to mostly eliminate favoritism and make regular communication one of the top priorities. You can't get anything done if there are people in the dark.
Pros
Great people
Great Customers
Fun working environment
Cons
Plan on working every holiday EXCEPT Christmas
Health Benefits Package is not very great
Growth within the company at the store level is difficult once you work your way up. Hard to get into the corporate side of things because most of the management that is there doesn't leave and the positions are never available.
Pros
Discount, coworkers, family type atmospher
Cons
insurance, favortisim, over work for some teams
Advice to Senior Management
Learn how to do all jobs so you know what it takes and how long it takes
Pros
Great work environment, great value
Cons
Some stores dont keep that tradition alive
Advice to Senior Management
Don't put your own best interest first
Pros
40% Discount on house brand, 15% on everything else
Cool visuals within the store
Great fellow co-workers
Never a dull moment
Cons
Management decisions for wages, promotions, and other important issues seem to be based off of a weak set of morals and principles. Definitely some bro-KI-n links in senior management, not to mention some very poor GSMs. Communication is NOT a strong suit of most members of the management team. Pay raises are generally 3%per year, not truely based on what each associate brings to the table. Direction vary's throughout the store, depending on which manager or the mood of the manager that you recieve it from (if you recieve ANY direction from the management team AT ALL).
Overall, store morale is VERY low, and there seems to be ZERO effort on behalf of the management to correct this.
US Prices only on website. Very frustrating to communicate to a customer WHY our prices are generally 20-40% higher than USD when Canadian dollar has been strong for 2 years. Canada seems to be the dumping ground for excess product, and a place that corporate uses to make up margin from a failing american economy.
Advice to Senior Management
Find your best and brightest associates, decide you want to keep them, and pay them according to their MERIT and contribution to the team. Institute a training program, the associates need some TRUE training on ALL products offered within the store. Work on sceduling throughout the store, working till 11pm at night then having to open is a true KILLER of morale!
High turnover is due to poor re-numeration to the associates.
