I have been working at Bass Pro Shops part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Family atmosphere, friendly long time associates, most have been there many years, they are very helpful. Excellent employee discounts. Very little micro management that I have seen in my years there. A good solid Store Manager, seems to really care about the common employee.

    Cons

Some managers pay very little if any attention to the few employee's who work very hard and stay for years. Younger short term employee's who fail to 'get it' and never seem to be interested in doing much work get all the accolades and awards from management, hard to figure. This does not imply that all department managers operate this way, most are great bosses, and a pleasure to work for, a few are very hard to communicate with due to personal issues I suppose. Its retail, and a high pace environment, so its sink or swim, I know pay will be low as it is in most retail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire or promote natural born leaders to be LEADS, who will work on problems within their departments and manage the hourly employee's. When you are a LEAD and just put your 8 hours in doing the work of the hourly employee's you will never accomplish much. Assign work, follow up to see its done, work on merchandising and pricing, monitor stock on the shelves, if it sells, fill it back up! Don't hire or promote on the buddy system, that is so old school. Weed out the lazy and underachievers! Ask associates if they want to move up or learn new positions, the best employee is the ones you already have on the job, try to keep them and advance them if they want to move up. After nearly 4 years I have never been asked if I would like to be promoted or learn a new job. I know its not that I am doing a bad job, its just a few managers fail to pay attention to what is going on in their departments. The managers who do pay attention are simply amazing folks and a pleasure to work for.
