    Pros

Bates is a small campus in cold Maine with very warm people. Collaborative work environment with very friendly colleagues. Gorgeous campus, labs with state of the art equipment including 400MHz NMR, SEM, confocal microscope

    Cons

Located in Lewiston, a nice city but not so much to do for young people but there's Portland 45 min away with so much more interesting things going on.

    Pros

Some campus jobs paid better than minimum wage.

    Cons

Most positions offered low salaries and part time hours.

    Pros

Working as a student intern at the office of intercultural education was such a great experience and provided insight on the politics of race and culture on the entire campus

    Cons

I think it is pretty ridiculous that they still haven't found a well-qualified director for the Multicultural (oops now intercultural) center! Get it together, Bates!

    Advice to Management

    set your priorities straight.

    Pros

Bates is a good environment to work in with good benefits and decent pay if you have been there a number of years.

    Cons

Starting pay for non salaried employees is low making it difficult to hire full time employees with desired qualifications.

    Advice to Management

Set the tone and be a good example of the work ethic you expect from others. We have a new president who is a fantastic communicator/leader to all departments of this liberal arts college and is leading us on a good path.

  8. The atmosphere at Bates College is one of positive personal achievement.

    Pros

There are many resources and connections at Bates College if one wants or needs to use them. The campus feels friendly and welcoming the moment you step on its grounds, and the staff from the grounds keepers to the professors exude the same...

    Cons

One of the down sides of working at Bates College is finding housing on or near the campus. Finding full-time employment can be difficult as well for more recent college graduates.

    Advice to Management

The recruiting formula seems to be a bit antiquated, and possibly should be revisited. There may be missed opportunity in obtaining some outstanding students and athletes.

    Pros

Bates has a terrific wellness program that provides free head/neck massages to employees a few times a year, and also provides easy access to CSAs in both the summer and the winter (with rebates for early subscribers).

    Cons

Finding parking can be a challenge, and with no parking garage(s), you're guaranteed to do a lot of snow removal off your car in the winter.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work.
