    Pros

Battelle does very interesting and engaging work, provides subject matter expertise to solve real-world problems.

    Cons

Old school management approach and structure, has not adapted well to a changing market.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary, work life balance, fitness center. Excellent technical staff. Interesting research and development projects. Excellent legacy as an independent, not-for-profit contract R&D firm.

    Cons

Benefits are declining rapidly, management is top-heavy, focus shifting from small research-oriented projects to larger service contracts and product development. Less focus on science and more on increasing revenue. Stovepiped business structure increasingly limits interdisciplinary collaboration.

    Advice to Management

Go back to what made the company great. Empower your technical leaders to win and execute interesting science and engineering projects.

I worked at Battelle Memorial (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They have a nice diversity and inclusion program.

    Cons

It seems like they do a reduction in force at least every two years. The benefits package used to be very competitive, but due to recent changes it is just average to below average.

    Advice to Management

Get up and wonder around. Setting in your office doesn't make you an effective manager.

    Pros

Battelle scientists do a lot of contract research. Depending on the division, the work environment varies. Pension plan WAS good. Used to hire innovative minds. Good facilities and instruments for applied research were available.

    Cons

Turning to be a typical project management company and deviating from Gordon Battelle's philosophy. A lot of qualified scientists and engineers are leaving or left. Project managers and departmental managers are engaged in politics than applied research. Fresh engineers like to join and wanted to be the project manager within a short period of time. Lacking diversity.

    Advice to Management

it used to be research driven institute that was led by PhD level researchers. Reduce managers, bring back research environment.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great history; some really smart scientists; if you can handle finding projects on your own, you are golden; great opportunities, if you can handle the process to enable them

    Cons

Management is focused on short-time frames and don't have patience beyond a six-month window; with the contraction in government spending, things have been difficult; management doesn't realize that small projects lead to big projects, and stay focused only on "big" wins; benefits are being reduced year after year

    Advice to Management

Mentoring; succession planning; long-range vision. These are all currently missing. HR department believes that employees are "fungible"--the farthest from the truth, in that every employee who leaves takes away a large part of what clients look to Battelle for, and new employees take a long time to gain that experience and knowledge

    Pros

The corporate offices are staffed by a truly professional group. If you need help from Columbus, they are there for you.

    Cons

On site management is hit or miss. I have met outstanding managers and others that were unprofessional, untrained, and disinterested in employees or their lives or issues.

    Advice to Management

Only hire quality managers at the lowest levels or train them. HR at the lowest levels was non-existent at our site. No opportunity for advancement potential.

    Pros

As long as they figure they need you, you are golden.

    Cons

Being outside of the HQ can make you next to invisible. Once they decide you are expendable, there is no place you can go--no matter what your performnance level is.

    Project Manager

Former Employee - Project Manager in Columbus, OH

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Broad spectrum of expertise and therefore information resources - Clear growth path - Good benefits and compensation packages

    Cons

    - Highly political - Constant attention on project hours vs. overhead hours such that if you want to avoid the RIF list, any overhead tasks associated with your job function, including required annual training, has to be done on your own time -There is an unspoken system where certain individuals seem to be identified as leaders and fast-tracked through various roles -- in the cases I saw at Battelle,it resulted in people being in positions of leadership that they weren't ready for and didn't have the experience to support their role or the decisions they needed to be making - Ladder climbers get noticed, not the people who actually do good work (in many cases)

    Advice to Management

Look for the people whose work performance is awesome, not the people who tell you they are awesome but really climb the ladder on the backs of others. Find truly capable people to move up the ladder, even if it means hiring from outside. "The Battelle way" is great, but new perspectives can be helpful.
