I worked at Battelle Memorial (More than a year)

    Pros

Employee development, benefits, competitive pay rates.

    Cons

Supervisors and managers seem less qualified for their position then the employees beneath them.

    Advice to Management

Look to promote inside company instead of hiring someone new because of education level. Work experience trumps a degree in terms of daily operations and supervisor competency.

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Battelle does amazing and brilliant scientific work.

    Cons

It's become more about who you know rather than what you know. Work life balance has gotten worse. Very little opportunity for middle level staff to move around.

    Advice to Management

    Find good leaders

    Pros

As long as they figure they need you, you are golden.

    Cons

Being outside of the HQ can make you next to invisible. Once they decide you are expendable, there is no place you can go--no matter what your performnance level is.

    Project Manager

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Broad spectrum of expertise and therefore information resources - Clear growth path - Good benefits and compensation packages

    Cons

    - Highly political - Constant attention on project hours vs. overhead hours such that if you want to avoid the RIF list, any overhead tasks associated with your job function, including required annual training, has to be done on your own time -There is an unspoken system where certain individuals seem to be identified as leaders and fast-tracked through various roles -- in the cases I saw at Battelle,it resulted in people being in positions of leadership that they weren't ready for and didn't have the experience to support their role or the decisions they needed to be making - Ladder climbers get noticed, not the people who actually do good work (in many cases)

    Advice to Management

Look for the people whose work performance is awesome, not the people who tell you they are awesome but really climb the ladder on the backs of others. Find truly capable people to move up the ladder, even if it means hiring from outside. "The Battelle way" is great, but new perspectives can be helpful.

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent work-life balance with options for teleworking, taking leave, and having family time. Good medical plan and decent benefits, if they don't completely cut them out. As long as you can keep your head down and do what your told without asking to many questions, you should be fine.

    Cons

Everything is based on internal politics, including management positions, performance reviews, and pay raises. Those in charge are very unprofessional and they seem to enjoy keeping that way. No way to get meaningful work done. They seem to have no money but can spend on meaningless things and areas. Management willingly violates the core values of the company without thinking twice. I have no idea how the place is still open. My advice is to stay clear of wreckage known as Battelle Memorial Institute.

    Advice to Management

This is more to board, clean house! Most upper management down through to middle management need to go. Constantly cutting benefits and staff will not retain the most productive workers.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits. Charity donation match.

    Cons

Poor managers and leadership. Manage is performed from top to bottom. People put in managerial positions are based on political endeavors rather than on the "right person for the position". Bullying, intimidation, and harassment is the culture of managers. Human resources and other political person(s) will back-up managers when "messes" happen in the organization. Poor ethics as it pertains to judgment, but their ethics are based on the law, which only helps to protect the company. I would not recommend Battelle Memorial Institute to anyone unless you're desperate for a job, then I would only recommend a temporary stop-gap.

    Advice to Management

The whole organizations needs an overhaul to break up the "good 'ol boys" club and work towards business based on business, not political gang like activity. It's a shame to see such a high potential organization function like this.

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time

    Pros

You have the opportunity to work on some projects that are fulfilling. In some cases, you can work with hard working individuals.

    Cons

There is a clique-ish atmosphere among some individuals. You have to play a lot of petty and political games to succeed. There are way too many levels of management, which seems to groom egos. Because of politics, middle managers often delegate their work to junior employees, while convincing upper management of their success. It is a discouraging environment to work in for any length of times. For new employees there is minimal training and it is on the employee to find work. Also, new employees are reprimanded for policy questions.

    Advice to Management

Battelle needs to overhaul its management structure. It is also holding on to "old school" concepts that will be detremental over the long term.

    Pros

Equipment was moderately new. the culture within the employees is fine. One can learn to work around all of the mismanagement to get ones job done.

    Cons

Too much management needing support. Management under-trained and under-talented. Personnel that should be assisting others get their job done, like Human Resources or contracts, have no reason to bother to do their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Less is more - delete a few levels
