    Changing Business roles

Analytical Researcher (Former Employee) Washington, DC

    Pros-Employee support services
    -Large Reach back to Columbus
-Above average compensation packages (not salary)

ConsBattelle is shifting away from consulting services and focusing on its research. There are currently limited oppotunities in the Washington Area to have any career growth within Battelle.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage your middle managers to focus on employee opportunities and growth instead of cometeing with one another for dollars.

    Arrogant Middle Management

    Finance (Former Employee)

ProsNice people that do the actual work. Great facilities. Good benefits.

ConsSeems as if they restructure every year without giving time for the last restructure to be effective. Many RIF's. Middle management seem not to care about their workers. I found them to be immature and arrogant.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop restructuring every year.

High end comprehensive solutions not valued by short sighted government contracting officials.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Columbus, OH

ProsNonprofit, no shareholders to satisfy, profits go to solve Man's problems (by law), high ethics, caring and genuine CEO, good life work balance upheld by most managers and leaders, unparalleled staff benefits in this industry build loyalty and recruitment of the best, salaries a bit higher than average, more of a team work organization compared to other government contractors.

ConsHigh ethics results in honest bids where Battelle will never bid too low and recoup via change orders, unparalleled staff benefits results in higher costs and inability to compete effectively for cheap, short-sighted government solutions, lack of internal investment to grow, mature and be competitive in a number of areas to include data analytics, cloud computing, and predictive analytics.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest internally to grow signature business line capabilities.

Good company as a whole. Came away with a lifetime of experience.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood people. Great benefits, even better pay.

ConsPoor management." Good ol'boy" mentality. Job site/project was isolated from corporate.

    Hostile working enviroment

Research Scientist (Former Employee) Columbus, OH

ProsNo pros...Just if you do not have any other choices and you need a paycheck.
It used to be a graet place to work.

ConsVery stressful work enviroment; no recognition for the technical staff, no opportunities for career development /advancment and for continuous education.

Advice to Senior ManagementOvergrown managment for the contract-based organisation.

    Historically great company....going....where?

    Demil Technician IV (Former Employee)

    ProsCorporate reputation is still significant
Above industry average pay for level of education required to work in demil.
Great satisfaction at project goal of ridding the world of chemical weapons.
    Exceptional colleagues to work with.

ConsThese are all perception which is often equal to reality.

The demilitarization contracts are high profit margin for Battelle and significantly impact the bottom line. But within the company it often seems to demil workers that they are not respected.

Demil projects are remote site locations. For the most point out of site and out of mind as long as there were no problems to address or awards to receive.

Never seemed like management was serious about growing new business to keep operations level employees once the demil projects ended.

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat ideas don't only come from the letters Ph.D.

Your line employees should be included in developing new businesses.

    Less than stellar

    Intelligence Analyst (Current Employee)

ProsOn a corporate level, they really do care about their employees

ConsEmployees in the field are ignored and left to fend for themselves. Sure, the job market sucks right now, but Battelle's excuses are getting old.

ADHD - Look a shiny object - Lets reorganize the everything

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSolid team members care about each other and the groups they support.

ConsDoes not have the patience needed to develop a full understanding of the impacts of change.

Advice to Senior ManagementReview members of your middle management team - their attitudes are causing the problems. Flatten the support structure and HOLD people accountable.

Its a not for profit company that has some benefits but are prejudiced against non-management staff.

Research Scientist (Current Employee) Dublin, OH

ProsThere are some very intelligent staff working on a variety of projects. Some work there is based on military contracts.

ConsThey pay less than average per Salary.com, raises can be pathetic even if you worked your ass off, you're compared to "perfection" versus "peers", and they're always cutting back. Forced-used PTO, reduced sick time from 1000 hours down to 16, reduced vacation time to carry over from previous year, and there will be more to come.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove rules regarding tuition reimbursement so that non-management staff can take MBA classes which will be approved for tuition reimbursement, instead of discriminating against them so that MBA classes are only approved for management-staff only. Tuition reimbursement is supposed to be an equal benefit to all staff, without discrimination based on your position, but based perhaps on future positions, or for those which previous staff have evolved into. (How else can one compete against staff from outside the company that do have their MBA for positions that become available within the company??) Also, a staff member had their tuition reimbursement denied when they were halfway thru the degree program. No reason was given, documented, justified or unanimously decided, To disagree formally means bringing your boss in front of HR and the end of your career. You have to make a rule so that this kind of important financial decision can't be so whimsically decided by a manager or if there was a manager change. As long as this culture exists, their tuition reimbursement program benefits management only. And then there's the "mentoring program" that has a lot of propaganda, but surprisingly, isn't available for all staff. Can you guess the theme?
