I have been working at Baxter full-time

    Pros

Company has good values and purposes. It provides work life balance and could be rewarding. Pretty good pay and benefits. People are nice for the most part.

    Cons

The company is slow to adapt new things. It is very conservative and rightfully so, but for people with desire to stay at the tech edge the place may feel stagnant. There are many incompetent IT managers who have nothing to do with technology and seem more like clerks than technology leaders. As a result business has little trust in internal IT staff and prefers to outsource projects to consulting firms.

    Advice to Management

Please look carefully at IT managers you hire and ask yourself a question - would you want to be led by that manager if you were part of that manager's team. Please improve communication and transparency

    Pros

    Hourly pay plus over time.

    Cons

Terrible company wide communication. Pay increases are non existent. No choice of vacation days.

    Advice to Management

Revise vacation policy. 1.8% raise does not cover cost of living increase year to year.

  6. Baxter is a great place to work at, but like every company in the regulated biotech industry, there is a lot of paperwor

    Pros

good company structure that prevents errors
    good healthy atmosphere
general sense that you're doing something good for people

    Cons

    too much bureaucracy
lots of company politics, but that's every almost company
they are not very nice to temporary workers

    Advice to Management

    hire more young people.
make it easier for engineers to make a change, because they often run into meaningless clerical obstacles. A small change requires 4-6 people from different departments to approve, this is not always efficient. This creates a delay in improvement.

    Pros

The people are just rediculously nice. I've worked at places before that are cliquish, and that is not the case here. Also nice is that you are doing good work for the betterment of mankind :-). Also, even though Baxter is in major flux right now, everything's been transparent and you get the feeling that people higher up than you (I'm pretty low) care about you.

    Cons

    Things move s l o w l y because Baxter is so big.

    Pros

Smart people, potential for flexible managers, they want to do the right thing, patient is always top of mind, compensated fairly

    Cons

Inflexible culture, work flexibility is extremely manager-dependent, not enough focus on the employees

    Advice to Management

If you truly want a diverse and inclusive culture, you need to accept people for who they are, not try to retrofit them into the Baxter mold. Try to focus more on the employees. Happy employees = more productive environment. It takes more than good pay to keep employees happy.

No on-boarding. People in VP and leadership roles that do not know how to communicate or provide clear direction. Decision-making is terrible.

    Pros

Depends on department and managers. You answer to several people, Office Space style. Sometimes work is pleasant and manageable.

    Cons

Some mangers are actively trying to push you out. Experienced great deal of sexism from direct management. I was doing the job of a employee who left with a job title much higher then mine, but I wasn't promoted or even given a raise. Just given more work that kept adding up without adequate training. Key people leaving leaves big holes, but no replacements, so you are asked to step up without any knowledge of the project left behind halfway finished. My regards for safety were answered, but was punished for bringing it up. Basically I was super frustrated before leaving. Weekends are mandatory and you are always on call, no matter what. No compensation for hours worked past the normal 8-5 as a salaried employee. Spent 12 hours at work Tuesday, better be in at 8 or earlier on Wednesday.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the managers that are bullying their team. Everyone is on edge about future of their employment, especially my old manager. She knows she is under performing, so she does not accept any responsibility for anything that doesn't work according to plan. As her employee, you do not expect to be talked up to upper management, only used as someone to blame. Any good ideas you have, you don't get credit for. Why bother to try hard if you have someone taking credit for your work.
