I worked at Baxter full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The initial pay is better than anywhere else in the area although not up to industry par. Good opportunity to learn business and management skills. The advancement opportunities are there. Successful established company isn't going anywhere, a rarity in this area.

    Cons

When I was there there was a lot of overtime. Management is very secretive about flaws and what is coming up. You can get stuck in one area and not be allowed to move on if you are not in good graces of management. Management seems to arbitrarily take a liking to some people and give others less of a chance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open with your employees. There are a lot of rumors and that comes from not having facts and having to guess.

I have been working at Baxter

    Pros

Seems to pay more than other places in the area

    Cons

Heavy weight of organization and just too many people not communicating with each other.

I have been working at Baxter as a contractor

    Pros

Good corporate culture, very good benefits, good professional development for entry to mid level careers. Can be a little overwhelming at first, but as Baxter is splitting into two companies next year, it should make it a little easier to manage. People are their best asset.

    Cons

As noted above, the sheer size can be overwhelming. Increasing Global focus, which can mean meetings during odd hours - since they will include those from overseas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to help staff develop a career path/plan. Provide mentoring opportunities.

I have been working at Baxter full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Growth, desire by the upper management to lead the division toward a premier Biotech company. Tenure is good and also a new wave of new hires are brought on to help create a healthy culture for positive changes.

    Cons

Multiple sites has historically created too many possible "silos" and this needs to be addressed methodically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be bold and more aggressive in order to bring your vision into reality.

I worked at Baxter full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some good co-workers that work hard.

    Cons

Lacks strategy/innovation . Very old school. Takes more than it can chew. Hardly finished acquisition and derive its value to surprise with the spin off.
Complete work life imbalance. Nothing Global about the company and how it functions except locations.
    Extremely poor leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

need to hire some good leaders with consulting background..... refresh the old school culture

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee  in  Deerfield, IL

I worked at Baxter full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Consistently profitable company that serves patients and health care professionals with a variety of medical devices, services, and drugs. Compensation was at market. Expressed company values are vanilla.

    Cons

Internal struggle between the BAX "lifers" who are just trying to ride it out until they hit their 85 points in the old defined benefit pension program vs. new talent brought in from other companies who want to change the culture and move at a faster pace. Lifers dislike newbies and a passive/aggressive counter-culture hinders faster evolution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the "dead wood", esp. from the top down. One of the GMs is psycho and needs to leave. Work-Life balance should be the goal, but unlikely with the pending split of "old" BAX vs. Newco (BioScience). Make internal change program ("Power Up") more than just a program du jour - make it stick.

I worked at Baxter full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

A lot of good team players trying to do the right thing.

    Cons

Highly political senior management only focused on their next move.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on doing what is right for the company rather than what is right for you.
