    Pros

Promotions are great if you bust your butt and do what management preens you to do. Time off policies were great, but they weren't set by those I was in direct contact with. Most of the staff I was with were friendly with each other.

    Cons

Long hours, extra time added to shifts. Not a lot of management help in senior positions, other staff micromanages new people. There's room for personal growth if you're part of the clique. Staff don't always treat clients very well, snide remarks after the person has walked away. Have personally seen nurses and other ER staff badmouth patients in the open hallways infront of other patients and family. Not a place I would want to be!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN!!! Just because you have employees working in your company who've been "trained" 6 months ago, doesn't mean they don't need refreshers. Pay attention to what your employees are doing, and listen and take heed to what patients and family members say. Listen to employees and quit judging people!

    Pros

Opportunity, management, great salary. Lots of opportunity for advancement, training, and working your way up in the company. Great compensation package.

    Cons

Have to use PTO for holidays, sick time, and vacation. Not great health insurance benefits. Takes a long time to hire on new people, leaving current employees doing a lot of extra work covering job vacancies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better health insurance, waive co pays for employees if using a Baycare facility.

    Pros

Working only 3 days a week gives you lots of time off to spend with family and friends.

    Cons

Must be good at multi-tasking, busy hospital with patients from diverse backgrounds.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I love that upper management is always thinking of ways to improve the customers experience. We are striving to be the best healthcare system in the nation. We also give back the community with several different fundraising campaigns.

I worked at BayCare Health System full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Staff is mostly nice. Good skill level and make the best with lousy management.

    Cons

I am a Registered Nurse, certified in the operating room (CNOR). I worked in the main operating room with mostly good staff. The management however, is terrible and makes the work atmosphere dismal with low morale. Very high employee turnovers with factory like conditions and wages that are not guaranteed. They send you home early without pay daily. They rush and create unsafe working environments continuously. This not for profit cares about its record profit. Profit that will make you question the competency of the surgical and hospital administrations.

The majority of scrubs worn in surgery are not laundered by the hospital. Industrial laundries reach temperatures that kill many germs found in blood, feces, and bodily fluids. That's how most hospital linen is cleaned. Instead, more profit is made by letting employees take their hospital attire scrubs home to clean in the family wash that does not reach required temperatures. Kindly ask any hospital employee on the front line of patient care, how their hospital cloths are washed and why? How often are they washed? Is it a machine? By hand? At all? Is the infection you and your loved one maybe fighting a result of this?

"Immediate use" sterilization (formerly "flashing") is used daily in their OR as a way of processing surgical equipment. This is recommended to be used in emergencies only by most organizations. Several steps of the decontamination and dry cycles of processing surgical equipment are removed by immediate use to ensure quick turnovers of cases without having to purchase more equipment. Imagine the equipment being used on a loved one that was inside another patient less than 60 minutes prior not going through the normal routine of decontamination, assembly, sterilization and cooling. This is not good. You can see if this has happened to you or a loved one by looking at the surgical report prepared by the operating room RN. Immediate use & infection have direct correlation to one another. Ask if a certified infection control practitioner is on hand to witness this stuff.
Would not recommend this place for employment in surgical services or surgery. If you do, at least prepare for leaving it in a few months as a precaution.
Please beware. If there was ever a place needed to demonstrate why Nurses unions are required, this is the place! All the best to you in health.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up and treat your employees how you would like to be treated. Why is it that your employees have crap for health insurance? Your record profits should allow for cutting of Federal and State funding since the hospitals are not for profit. Pay your taxes like everyone else.
A hospital that runs like a factory will not last.
Operating Room management at Saint Joseph Main should be reminded it is the 21st century and that times have changed. Nickles and dimes, nickles and dimes.
Quality over quantity. These are human beings, not merchandise.
UNIONS in healthcare should be mandatory.
