I worked at Bayer Animal Health as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The project managers were fantastic mentors and really wanted the interns to get involved and trusted us with some important and interesting tasks. We were encouraged to follow what interested us and we were allowed to see many different aspects of the plant.

    Cons

There were many contracted employees that weren't great to work with. There was a lot of training at the beginning that was probably not necessary fort the position. For a couple weeks after this training, I felt somewhat underutilized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The internship program could be a little more structured.

I worked at Bayer Animal Health full-time

    Pros

There are opportunities to do really great work with great people.

    Cons

There is a "good ole boys club" for sure, so if you are not in the club, your opportunities will be limited. Also, their products are old and dying and/or going off patent, so they are going to shrink rather than grow, so there will not be much opportunity there. Their veterinary customer base is really angry at some of the company decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a hold of some fresh products to replace your dying revenue stream.

I worked at Bayer Animal Health as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

    Lots of work, helpful coworkers.

    Cons

Contractors rarely get hired on--2-year "veterans" are overlooked in favor of outside applicants.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the qualities of the individuals, not just statistical data, when reviewing productivity, criteria, etc.

I have been working at Bayer Animal Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people are very friendly and professional. Employees work hard and care about the success of the company. Bayer pays very well, has good benefits, and a lot of career opportunity if you are willing to relocate. There are many good mid level managers.

    Cons

Work/life balance can be an issue, for some departments more than others. There are two big cultural issues at Bayer: the good old boys club is the first one, which is enabled by the second. That is the company values are endorsed by senior management but consistently applied or modeled at all. There seem to be power plays and favoritism. Rumors suggest a very divisive executive group that is dysfunctional. This behavior appears to be not only tolerated, but encouraged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Model the company values. Walk the talk. Hold people accountable for their actions consistently--across the board.

    Pros

Amazing products, and for the most part, your manager and co-workers are pretty good to deal with. Your clients that are loyal and like the company, will support your as much as they possibly can. Company is "well organized" like a bureaucracy, but communication is terrible.

    Cons

You will work for your money. Prepared to be in front of your computer in the early AM, spend a day in the field, and be back in front of your computer until very late PM. "Clinic Strategy" makes it difficult to do the job with out lying. Good luck playing by all the compliant rules... want to bring donuts or bagels in to a clinic? be prepared to do at least a half hour of paperwork.

Everything is priority per management, but the focus tends to be stupid crap that won't help you get paid. i.e. focusing on a $60 product, instead of $700 product.

Many clinics really hate Bayer and don't want to deal with us because we put out the OTC letter a few years back. Plus, not a ding against Bayer, but their is way to much competition in this industry. Bayer is a bit of an arrogant company, but their products really are the best. They feel they can charge more, and participate in less programs then competitors - and they are right because they are making up loss in the vet channel by selling in the stores.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let us play by the same rules as the competition. Be competitive with programs (i,e, buy 6 get 2 should be a given if everyone else is doing buy one get one free to the vets, or buy 6 get 3 free)
