Pros
Insurance is cheap since they have so many employees. About 40.00 a month for single coverage. Parking is free, although you may have to walk a few blocks to get there. Dart passes are inexpensive and a shuttle runs early morning, but stops at 7 pm. 401K matches are good;I believe it was 100% match up to 3% of pay.
Cons
Pay compared to other companies is terrible, ended up with a $7.00/hour increase when I left. Raises run 3-5% so new hires earn more than you even if you have worked years. I never witnessed a promotion of a med tech within the Baylor system, although it may be available to those outside of the laboratory. No one ever says thank you for anything you have done.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to the "workers" they are the ones that keep the company running. Show some appreciation sometimes, we don't need umbrella's, beach blankets or flashlights as tokens. Would have rather had great parking for a week, or coupons for eating in the cafeteria, 20% discount isn't much when you look at the prices charged. Yes it would have cost more, but would have been used instead of being put into the goodwill pile.
Pros
Reputation of hospital, flexible work schedule, pay adequate.
Cons
I never had a formal review. If I did I was not present.
Medical insurance options not very good. Worse than spouses though spouse works for Countrywide Home Loans, a non-medical company. Chose spouse"s insurance as was better price and option.
On my unit the nurse technicians were very rude to the nurses. I do not think that this is a large problem on other units, but at BIR (where I worked) I did see the power of the aides was sometimes a problem. Some of the long-term nurses, and newer nurses particularly, were intimidated by the aide(s)--including myself. I would say that this was about half the reason why I chose to leave BIR. It was not a good feeling to be yelled at by a nurse tech/aide in front of other staff members even when you point out that the aides should not be on the internet when it is past time to perform some key patient duties. By the way I did complain about this incident to the house manager. The nurse tech never was written up.
Advice to Senior Management
Better medical insurance. Pay more attention to your nurses and find weak areas to strengthen. Fire nurse aides/techs even if they have worked on the units 10+ years. I felt our unit manager was friends with some of these aides for years and therefore there was an understanding nothing would be done if I complained.
Pros
Pay, Benefits, ability to advance.
Cons
Incoming Administrators are sometimes very inexperienced, causing confusion and a lack of communication. Especially difficult if incoming Admin. is out to quickly make a name for himself.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to personality of Senior Management. Learn more about them and if they are capable of "fitting in" with current staff and managers. Just because they have family already in the system is not an indication they will be good at their jobs.
Pros
Benefits, nice people to work with
Cons
low pay, and there are some prejudices within management
Advice to Senior Management
pretty good, but one-sided
Pros
It has the potential to be best clinical provider in the business, Baylor should be a top 10 clinical setting in the US. The physicians and the nurses are among our nations' best in giving care and compassion.
Cons
Politics and the course the Sr mgmt team has taken with the organization over the past 5 yrs. BHCS has moved from its core of focusing on care and delivery and more about being a corporation. It does not fit well with the core values of being compassionate clinical provider.
Advice to Senior Management
Take a long hard look in the mirror, is the mgmt leading this organization down the right path. Can BHCS continue to survice on brand image alone.
