Pros
Flexibility to choose what you want to contriute towards
Cons
The company may no longer be viable as a brand-name consulting company
Advice to Senior Management
Clean up your act and promote the right talent. Consulting is a knowledge business. Its important to ensure your investments are targeted to helping employees grow intellectually. Managing Directors who worked their way up through merit and talent ned to be given more room to hire and develop good employees. If you have hored good people, its also your responsibility to hep them grow with thr right timely feedback and investment.
Pros
The people are really what is keeping BE together. Management does respect and understand the work / life balance.
Cons
No communication from practice leads or management. Because of the slash and burn policy of Harbach earlier in the year to return to profitability, it is very difficult to be transferred from a crappy client. Over half of the consultants on projects are independents that had to be hired since all the BE consultants were let go. No loyality from them. Makes one wonder why everyone just doesn't become independent and then charge a premium to BE to allow them to use you.
Advice to Senior Management
More communication
Pros
If you join the right team at BearingPoint, your career growth can be tremendous and there are still some great people at the company. Some of the senior managers are really strong.
Cons
It is very important to join the right team of people at the company and also to ensure that your MD likes you. If you join the wrong team, your career will probably suffer at the company and you will end up in staff aug positions.
Advice to Senior Management
Commumication needs to be improved tremendously. Senior Management needs to focus on sales and bring in more interesting clients.
Pros
This could vary on a group basis. Bright people and strong team spirit. Good opportunities for self driven individuals
Cons
Salaries just make it to the mark. Lesser perks and incetives due to bad financials
Advice to Senior Management
NA
Pros
General ability to see many different technology and work at many different clients
Cons
Poor financial history. Low morale. Poor work/life balance. Up to 100% travel.
Advice to Senior Management
There has been talk for years about "people" being our most important asset, and figuring out ways to improve retention, employee satisfaction and pay for performance. To this date, there is no formal plan about any of these. There are some small and minor advances in terms of BearingPoint sponsored training programs (Yale), and a very feeble attempt at Performance Stock Units which are worthless. We have spent more on Executive severance packages then we did on employee bonus's.
Pros
There can be some interesting projects to work on but since you have to "sell yourself" into a new gig, it can be very competitive and i just want to work on projects.
Cons
No room to move up. Work way too much and mangers can be a downright mean. The travel can be grueling and you don't have a social life and if you are married you are away all the time. Being home for only 48 hours every week is not enough.
I felt like I joined a cult and didn't drink the kool-aid
Advice to Senior Management
I don't think you have any idea so listen to your employees.
Pros
Opportunity-rich environment: Lots of options to move forward with the right enterpreneurial spirit
Cons
Management, direction and strategy with respect to market
Advice to Senior Management
go private!
Pros
The people. My colleagues are professional, friendly, and have a great sense of client service. Most of the senior level people have several years of experience in multiple firms. The leadership is accessible (yes, I have emailed the CEO, and yes - he has personally responded on the same day).
Cons
The company has been beaten down financially over the last few years, and it is taking a toll on morale. Our new career model, compensation and development plans, and focus on people is making huge gains on this, but there is still work to be done.
Advice to Senior Management
Speed up the changes! We may need to drop the negative folks in order to complete the transformation. The changes in the MD level have been positive, and undesirable turnover at the senior level has been tolerable. Undesirable junior turnover means that we have to spend more time recruiting.
Pros
interesting clients and engagements; mostly intelligent people
Cons
let's just say that with a stock price at 1.25/share or so that times are tough.
Advice to Senior Management
go private or go home
Pros
Earn more hotel points than you dreamed possible! But seriously, the chance to travel the US, gain experience a range of industries and work with all levels of client organizations from NOC analysts to Senior VPs. I've always been provided the training I need to gain skills regarding new technologies or soft skills as my career progresses (e.g. Communications and leadership skills) although you may have to push and take control to make sure it happens.
You will meet loads of interesting people from a wide variety of backgrounds both other employees and from the client teams, providing you with connections for the rest of your career.
Cons
Your experience will probably vary based on the quality of your performance manager. You need to make sure you speak to him/her during your interview and get a feel for whether they would make a good champion for you - pushing for training, raises, interesting projects.
BearingPoint's financial woes are a drag on morale.
Advice to Senior Management
Sort out the accounting issues.
