I have been working at BeavEx full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Job was easy to pick up on. Love interacting with the drivers around the nation. They attempt to keep the computers up to date. Salary is good for what you do.

    Cons

There is no structure from employees to managment, people talk to managment with no respect for their position. Managment sometimes forget people work all hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come up with a program that show how valuable your employees are!!

  3. Using drivers as IC's when they are 100% treated as employees

    Former Contractor - Route Driver
    Former Contractor - Route Driver

I worked at BeavEx as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Same scheduled route every day (M-Sat), steady paycheck, start location close to my house, pretty good pay per mile, being on the road in the comfort of my own vehicle.

    Cons

Very excessive fees deducted from your weekly paychecks, including cargo insurance. Beavex requires all drivers, no matter if you drive a semi tractor/trailer or a subcompact car, to have a $1 milion cargo insurance policy ($100,000 per event up to $1 million in aggregate), which you will not be able to buy anywhere but through Beavex since no one sells policies that high. You must provide your own commercial insurance, or buy it through Beavex, even for drivers who do not have or need a CDL. You are required to lease their android phone which only does one thing.....runs the Beavex application which is supposed to be the daily manifest, but we are required to use a paper manifest as well, You cannot use it as a phone other than to dial 911. So you are leasing the phone, which can only be used to run the Beavex program, and paying for the data charges, which is quite expensive. Also required to sign up with CMS (Contractor Management Services) which provides for a small accident/occupational policy. The total costs deducted from your gross pay is about 12%. Beavex also wants you to buy their shirts, jackets and caps with their company logo. Not cheap.

Every aspect of this job is controlled by Beavex....training, route start time, arrival times at every single stop (which is all being tracked by the android phone plus constant GPS location), time to arrive back at the main pickup location, what to wear and so on. If something comes up along your route, for example, a location manager said you forgot to pick up or drop off an item, you will get a call from Beavex.

So while Beavex calls this an Independent Contractor position, and really the only thing you as the driver provides is your vehicle and maybe a clipboard, the IRS would definitely classify you as an employee. Obviously this employee vs independent contractor controversy has been going on forever, but it's time for the IRS to get serious about investigating this issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit treating the IC's as employees, have something positive to say occasionally when the driver is doing a great job instead of berating the driver for the very isolated mistake. No one is perfect, but Beavex doesn't understand what being a human being is all about. No appreciation for a job well done. No empathy if the driver has a temporary medical condition.

I worked at BeavEx full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The leadership team and former CEO use to make this place what it "was". Business model is sound with a national footprint that most don't have.

    Cons

Private equity has their team in charge now and all is changing culturally. Communication is at an all time low. Finance department lacks leadership. There is no strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider your employees and customers before driving change. Profits are important, but there will be no profits if your team and customers leave you.

I have been working at BeavEx full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good atmosphere. Friendly co-workers who go out of their way to help you. Welcoming environment without a lot of the formal corporate BS.

    Cons

    - Inefficient. A lot of information is maintained manually with pen & paper & faxes. Hundreds of pages of redundant paperwork to deal with every day. Is it 1984 or 2014?

    - Technologically inept. The computer systems they do have are quite dated and "new & improved" hardware and software rolled out by corporate management creates more problems than it solves.

    - Lax management, little attention to detail or professionalism. No developed training, safety or leadership programs. They talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

    - Corporate management more concerned with cost cutting than making sure the company runs well. Typical race to the bottom attitude.

    - No opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more effort into bringing the company into the 21st Century with increased automation and better computer hardware and software. Managing drivers and routes with pen & paper & Excel spreadsheets is a relic of the last century.

Institute standardized development programs so everyone gets the same degree of training and education about the job and their function within the company.

Lose the penny pinching cost cutting attitude. It pads the bottom line at the cost of quality of service. There will always be someone who can do the job for less, focus instead on doing the job BETTER.

I have been working at BeavEx

    Pros

Flexibility with schedule and home life

    Cons

The company all around is of poor quality. The entire company is built with too many chiefs and not enough Indians. At least 95% of management is in management and shouldn't be. Often times most managers are managers out of need rather than qualification. There is absolutely no training and growth within the company. Everything is built on personal emotions and need for power rather than a business need. More time is spent on being reactive and subjective to all personnel and business issues rather than being proactive and object to issues at hand. The company invest nothing in it's biggest asset: the employees and even less into the quality of the environment and business needs. They offer no support with their open door policy nor do they supply you with adequate equipment and training to effectively complete your job for their business needs. All the core talents with all the wealth of information have removed themselves (says a lot) and you should beware that this may not be a suited place for you if you are looking for anything long term.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should completely consider starting over finding true talent and people invested in making growth rather than playing power struggles.
