I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Bechtel people are truly professional and the projects are exciting. Salaries and benefits are excellent, of course, and the opportunities for growth are never-ending.

    Cons

My biggest challenge was living in the San Francisco area: very expensive and time-consuming commutes. The quick decisions to make major moves were difficult for some families. If you cannot tolerate living in backward places, some assignments would pose a problem.

    Advice to Management

Communicate the reasons behind some decisions better. Dedicate some time to individual or small group meetings just for the purpose of communicating to employees.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Schedule, good benefits, good work/life balance

    Cons

You must have an aggressive personality to get promoted, to find projects, or to simply get your questions answered.

    Advice to Management

You need to bail out the Power GBU sinking ship. Reduce your overhead and win new work. Spend more time developing your employees into successful engineers.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

typically good pay, 5 weeks time off, often flexible schedules

    Cons

company worked with states of VA and MD to receive money in return for having specific number of employees in each state - disgusting that a company of their size would make these agreements (and shame on the states too). Move Frederick office to Reston without raising pay (the Reston area typically pays 20-25% more than Frederick).

    Pros

Travel if you like going to different countries some good and some bad locations

    Cons

Too much gossip Favoritism Promotions and good pay to those who belongs to inner circle Many unqualified individuals get good pay and position regardless of their qualifications, but because of the connections. Out of touch management

    Advice to Management

Be proactive and stop favoritism Hire and promote those who are qualified and not those with connections

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Bechtel projects are always exciting and challenging. Bechtel promotes and compensates high performers who are willing to be flexible and goes beyond expectations.

    Cons

Only way to move up in Bechtel is working projects which means moving approximately every 2 to 3 years. Dealing with office politics at times can be overwhelming. At times significant mandatory overtime to get the job done. Not a good work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Take into consideration that people are away from family sometimes for extended periods.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great salary, time-off policies, convenient location, opportunity to travel.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy, office politics, poor morale. They have too many managers that somehow climbed the ladder many years ago but are horrendous at managing people. Tis the age of the MBA, not the experienced, proven worker.

    Advice to Management

Foster an environment where your lower level employees feel valued and have the ability to grow within the company.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large Organization, well known company. Company will work hard to keep employees even when work is slow

    Cons

Need geographical flexibility. Management is not open to switching to different Business Unit within the company. Noticeable different in the age demographic. Will get lost in the crowd.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting work on some of the world's most important projects Widely respected name in the construction industry You feel you're doing important work with mostly talented people

    Cons

Lack of respect for everyone outside of the most senior managers (PVPs and above with a few young LDP's who have family connections thrown in). Everyone else is treated like they can be repeatedly squeezed on benefits, salary, bonuses, and crappy assignments, because "hey you work for the greatest construction company in the world!" No longer an implicit culture of "give and take", where I as a worker will put in extra hours and travel over the weekend/holiday missing important family events, living away from home, etc., because my team and manager respect me and will help me through the rough patches of work slowdowns. It's become of matter of take, take, take, and when you pathetically ask for a little decency and understanding in return you're reminded that it's a job stupid, not a work family like you thought. There's a lot of heartache coming down the pipe for many extremely talented and hardworking people as the Power GBU follows downturns in work for Civil, M&M, and BSSI. It makes me sad because I really did love working for them.

    Advice to Management

I don't think the current management, including the "uber" CEO/COO/President really cares what anyone else has by way of suggestions. He's been lucky to preside over some recordbreaking profits over the past few years and has clearly solidified himself as the Wizard who can surround himself with those, ahem, "leaders" sharing his maximum short-term profits vision. My only hope is that the next generation of Bechtel, who by all accounts has been a hardworking, decent, and much respected individual in his quick rise through the organization, will soon take over and herald a return to a company culture like that established by his grandfather and those who came before him. By the way, RPB is no longer the CEO; should change this in Glassdoor before you ask people to approve of his performance!
