I have been working at Bechtel (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Everyone treat you like family. Very diverse company of all race. Good company to work for.

    Cons

Move around a lot from projects and not knowing until last minute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better job training new college hires. Sometime mentor That is assigned is too busy to train you or make time for you. Better next assignment options. These people sacrifice and move their family for this company.

    I worked at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

Bechtel is willing to take risks on employes in whom they have faith. Managers appreciate hard workers who complain little and keep their nose to the grindstone. Additional responsibilities and potential for advancement are offered to specific employees who perform. Others are left idle, mainly because they've proven unreliable. Mentors are provided and genuinely help and offer guidance. I also had access to Project Management who provided encouragement, insight into business practices and future plans.

    Cons

Although hard work is noticed and appreciated, it's not always rewarded monetarily. On projects there is an endless supply of urgent work and not enough hours in the day. Employees often suggest leaving the company and returning at a later date as a method of career advancement. Projects are cut to the bone and every dime is watched on every level.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Plenty of vacations and holidays
    Flex time
    9/80 work schedule

    Cons

Bechtel is a project based company. (No project = no job)
When you are on the project you may not be allowed to attend training due to tight project schedule.
Bechtel try to minimize overhead cost then they will lay you off at the end of project.
Career development and training program is very limited.
Some benefits got cut over the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote young people to get more responsibility.
    Develop training program.
    Invest in technology
Policy enforcement (sometime people does not get benefits as shown in policy as it require manager "approval")

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

-The benefits are good for full time employees.
-You get the opportunity to travel, on short notice. (I was literally told to move across the globe in 1 week.)

    Cons

-You are often locked into your job, until the end of a project at which point you're laid off. You are pretty much on your own to find a new job.
-Training in the company is rather poor. If you've seen the 40 year old technical manuals QC and Construction BCert employees are using to train, it is pretty embarrassing.
-Questionable qualification of some employees. Getting a PE license isn't going to keep our esteemed Engineering department from making poor designs because they have NO EXPERIENCE IN A PLANT.
-Pay is not competitive with the clients we work for.
-OT is not paid for certain positions. If senior employees are working 11, 12 hours a day to do the work in a 10 hour day they should be re-imbursed at a fair rate. Not a bonus that is 1/4 the cost of the hours they put in.
-Quality is quickly falling on projects as more and more jobs are outsourced. More Bechtel projects seem to have some rather significant issues that are frankly embarrassing. This leads our 'repeat' customers to leave us.
-Site employees are second class citizens compared to those working in the home offices.
-Over utilization of visa holding employees, not hiring enough employees (state side) with U.S. citizenship. Hiring visa holders to work in the states should be the exception, not the rule.
-Rampant anti-union attitude when most of the non-manual employees at this company have never held a tool or worked in the trades.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Instead of talking about 'quality' do something about it. Don't reward people with useless trinkets. Establish training programs that actually work. Update some of the 40 year old training material we use in Construction.
-Get your engineers out of the office and into the field. There is too much information that Engineers with zero construction or operating experience know about the plants they are tasked with designing. If they're working at a project office, make sure they actually get into the plant instead of sitting at their desk all day.
-Update the internal Bechtel website, it is unorganized and is unprofessional.
-Hire more people with actual skilled backgrounds. Believe it or not, Engineers who have worked in the trades do exist.

Try executing a project that does not hit the newspaper with significant quality or schedule issues and then maybe we'll have some new repeat customers.
