    I worked at Bechtel

    Pros

Benefits, international opportunities if your life allows it

    Cons

Old fashioned management, not good for millenials, slow job growth and promotions, being a construction company 80% of the workforce barely passed high school. The smart folks are either in the corporate offices winning more work or on bad projects which have gone south.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to change old fashioned thinking. Encourage better work-life balance.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Money is fantastic, where there is confusion there is money. 401K, health insurance is better than the stuff you find on the Affordable Care plans. 5 weeks vacation.

    Cons

You have to work allot of hours for the above mentioned money. The ethical values the company claims to hold as important stop as soon as the work starts. This is not a company good for families unless money is all your after. They do not promote individuals with credentials they only promote off of the buddy system. You're hired to do what your told and keep your questions and concerns to yourself. Raises only come to the chosen ones and usually if your lucky to get a raise it is very small.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start weeding out the leaches that just so happen to belong to the right off site group and start listening to the rest of your employees. It wouldn't hurt to show a little bit more appreciation to employees that work there butt off to make you look good.

    Pros

Global, lots of opportunities to learn

    Cons

Can be stressful, and sometimes size makes it impossible to deal with so many ways of doing the same thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop moving people around with no experience into a certain position just because they are done at a project site.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good pay and 401k match

    Cons

They are not very employee friendly, an example is they do not authorize employees to telecommute without completing a formal request and having the business unit president approve it. Not much flexibility or feeling of trust by management.

Good Work Life Balance; Opportunities Scarce

    I worked at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

    - great benefits and salary
    - good work life balance
    - they care about their employees and are supportive of any needs
    - great reputation in the construction industry

    Cons

    - recently, the projects/positions are scarce
    - not a lot of growth in the US
    - tasks subdivided among disciplines with poor hand-offs; work walled off making it difficult to get things done
    - good ole boy network with poor promotion decisions
    - no long-term planning by upper management, rather rash decision and last minute reactions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - keep the benefits, salary, and work life balance going
    - make sure to plan years ahead and not just react
    - get to know the employees and promote from within rather than hiring out
    - promote those who truly understand the network not those who can "talk" more than show their knowledge
    - stop dividing the work so much making it difficult to get things done
    - bid smarter and learn from competition, not just submitting same bids over and over
    - cut the fat when certain employees aren't cutting it
    - diversify and don't rely on the same clients

I worked at Bechtel as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great Opportunities! A lot of challenging projects and autonomy of work. People are very friendly and willing to help.

    Cons

Early on in the internship it can seem overwhelming with all the acronyms and level of details being explained.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

internship onboarding videos earlier in the internship. Less requirements to attend webcast that usually do not apply to the corporate office

I have been working at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

"Most people work a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off"

Wealth of knowledge and experience. Ideal for a young engineers seeking professional mentorship.

    Cons

Hesitation to expose younger engineers to site or commissioning work. With the growing number of retirees, the company seems slow to groom more mid-level professionals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek better ways to transfer knowledge from seasoned engineers to younger ones.

    Pros

Everyone treat you like family. Very diverse company of all race. Good company to work for.

    Cons

Move around a lot from projects and not knowing until last minute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better job training new college hires. Sometime mentor That is assigned is too busy to train you or make time for you. Better next assignment options. These people sacrifice and move their family for this company.

  11. Working for Bechtel, construction perspective

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at Bechtel

    Pros

Challenging projects across multiple industries in locations worldwide, you can gain exposure to multiple disciplines - within construction in field engineering or superintendent positions in different crafts such as civil, electrical etc, and outside construction with engineering, contracts, project controls etc.

    Cons

Always on road somewhere for project but this is typical for construction disciplines, which I am. Engineers have more opportunity to stay in a home office environment if that is what you want although they encourage site assignments as well to promote better understanding of what it takes to build a project.
