    Pros

Large company with opportunities to grow in and cross the regions as long as you are a good performer.

    Cons

Recent business restructuring caused frequent job and pay cuts. Benefits also deteriorated in the past few years but with new CEO stepping in office, many things can improve.

    Pros

Mature company grew thru acquisition and maintained standards. Good leadership. People-oriented.

    Cons

HR is managed from Belgium so a lot of red tape and impersonal job grading. Not the greatest compensation or upwards communication.

I have been working at Bekaert full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This was a foot hold for Bekaert, a global steel wire manufacturer that serviced the west coast and pacific northwest. It should have been a much more profitable area. excellent position for the pulp wire market and log bundling strand. Union workers kept a strangle hold on skilled labor.

    Cons

Manpower was constantly an issue and caused problems with invetory and scheduling. Quality department was struggling to keep up with innovation for areas that could have been very profitable for this area of North American market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, management did a great job with pushing and working with this plant for as long as they could, ultimately too much was going against Bekaert with this particular plant.

I worked at Bekaert full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The salary, bonus, and benefits were quite good with the job offered.

    Cons

The management among departments is not very solid and well coordinated, moreover some of the departments did not have the power to push other department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees are human not only mere tools , so please do not give them overloaded work.

I have been working at Bekaert full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good products, research and development, skilled workforce.

    Cons

Highly centralized, top down management style. Branch operations entirely under the control of head office. Too much focus on keeping costs down, mostly by driving down wages and stripping local offices of support staff. No local autonomy whatsoever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the difference in regional markets, costs of living, the talent of the local work force. Stop investing in the false economy of low wage rates. The underpaid are seldom dedicated to the cause and are usually looking for a way out. The success of the whole should not vary inversely with the success of its parts.

I worked at Bekaert full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great work/life balance; in total 47 (!) days off per year incl public holidays. Low stress level. Enjoyable colleagues. Recommended for career starters - very good technical trainings and interesting projects to work on in an international environment. Very good benefits.

    Cons

NIH syndrome very strongly present; Senior mgmt is all Flemish with ltd experience outside of Bekaert. Extremely political. Old boys network prefer YES men. People with great track records in other companies who joined in the last 5 years left or were forced to leave. Low bonus component - you don´t get much more if you exceed your targets compared to those who only show up every day. Salary increases for promotions are in the lower(set) single digit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire A-players on the top positions; Think earnings in stead of market share; There is much more than 100 m€ to save; Become an outside oriented company; request high returns out of R&D spending.

Former Employee - R&D Project Manager in Brussels (Belgium)

I worked at Bekaert full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good salary package, professional and strong senior management team, emphasize on teamwork, very good life/work balance

    Cons

Mysterious promotion system, very Belgian company (2000 employee out of +20 000 are from Belgium while none of executives is non/Belgian, very secretive in way of working (only Belgians work on sensitive projects). I felt discrimination between treating foreigners against Belgian employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not promoting young-not mature Belgian junior managers to middle level managers. This is a big burden to work in a not healthy environment which is a cause of such promotions. Keep your strong senior managers. What I see is that lots of very good people were fired recently because they were in wrong projects.
