Despite being a large company, the old Bell Laboratories was a fabulous place to work!

I worked at Bell Laboratories full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The old Bell Labs (before things fell apart starting around 1988) wanted to hire the best people, and then develop them further. Great career support of new engineers, and the best opportunities to work with leading lights of nearly any technical or science field. Great compensation opportunities, especially as you moved up the ranks. Tremendous amount of personal say in what work you wanted to pursue. Easy to move between organizations to follow interesting projects.

    Cons

Very NJ and IL centric. Old fashioned performance review tended to force rank, but there was an assumption that if you were good enough to get hired, then you could make a contribution somewhere, so there wasn't an ax hanging over even the "threes".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too late now, the old Bell Labs is dead. Killed by an activist government that didn't really understand the value of a national telecommunications utility.

    Pros

Nice environment with nice people working there. There are a lot of very bright, interesting, hard working people at Bell Labs -- making the work usually a lot of fun and with high achievement.

    Cons

Management people are not all qualified. They need to be trained before promoting to manager and team leader. Executive management is rather out-of-touch with day-to-day activities, situations, and people.

I worked at Bell Laboratories full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of very bright, interesting, hard working people at Bell Labs -- making the work usually a lot of fun and with high achievement.

    Cons

Technical people are promoted into management -- not all have management skills. In addition (may be dated), executive management is rather out-of-touch with day-to-day activities, situations, and people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train people in management skills BEFORE you promote them. Keep communication within the company as open as possible. Reward according to what you say is important -- inconsistency is seen right through
