Despite being a large company, the old Bell Laboratories was a fabulous place to work!

Member of Technical Staff, Supv, Department Head (Former Employee)
    Holmdel, NJ

ProsThe old Bell Labs (before things fell apart starting around 1988) wanted to hire the best people, and then develop them further. Great career support of new engineers, and the best opportunities to work with leading lights of nearly any technical or science field. Great compensation opportunities, especially as you moved up the ranks. Tremendous amount of personal say in what work you wanted to pursue. Easy to move between organizations to follow interesting projects.

ConsVery NJ and IL centric. Old fashioned performance review tended to force rank, but there was an assumption that if you were good enough to get hired, then you could make a contribution somewhere, so there wasn't an ax hanging over even the "threes".

Advice to Senior ManagementToo late now, the old Bell Labs is dead. Killed by an activist government that didn't really understand the value of a national telecommunications utility.

    Summer Internship at Bell Laboratories

LTE Transport Software Developer (Former Employee)
    Murray Hill, NJ

ProsNice environment with nice people working there. There are a lot of very bright, interesting, hard working people at Bell Labs -- making the work usually a lot of fun and with high achievement.

ConsManagement people are not all qualified. They need to be trained before promoting to manager and team leader. Executive management is rather out-of-touch with day-to-day activities, situations, and people.

Great fellow technical people -- management not always well trained

Member of Technical Staff (Former Employee)

ProsThere are a lot of very bright, interesting, hard working people at Bell Labs -- making the work usually a lot of fun and with high achievement.

ConsTechnical people are promoted into management -- not all have management skills. In addition (may be dated), executive management is rather out-of-touch with day-to-day activities, situations, and people

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain people in management skills BEFORE you promote them. Keep communication within the company as open as possible. Reward according to what you say is important -- inconsistency is seen right through

    Researcher and manager

    Research (Current Employee)

ProsUsed to be reasonable degree of freedom, good people to work with

ConsToo many changes, mostly not for the good. Restriction on freedom, quality of people going down. Research management lacks credibility

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on the fundamentals of what made BL made great once.

Not a great company to work for

    Forklift Driver (Former Employee)
    Madison, WI

ProsCo-workers can learn to work with eachother; however, managers are not part of the team. Co-workers can be nice.

ConsCompany doesn't focus on employee satisfaction; however, focuses on scare tactics. Promotes and supports Bully in the work place even though it causes loss of money since the bully will get people fired with harassment and intimidation. Then they have to keep training new people since the old ones leave.
If a employee startes in the factory they will be more likely promoted to different positions in the factory and less likely to work in the office and a promotion.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to work on keeping people that are already trained and employee satisfaction.
