I worked at Bell and Howell full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Some good people very dedicated to their job. Consolidation of locations and activities will allow increased focus on new product and sales.

    Cons

This is a company focused on mail. That is a dying market. The long term freeze in pay and 401k match make it difficult to retain and hire new staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on growth outside mail. Many opportunities exist primarily around the software products and services. Those should be leveraged to grow into a new business

I have been working at Bell and Howell full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very stable, team-oriented staff, interesting & challenging work.

    Cons

No raises, benefit cuts, no 401K match since 2008. Prior to 2008 raises were historically weak (<4% typ.) due to "business conditions", but company is very fond of handing out "VP' and "Director" titles, presumably with commensurate pay increases.

Upper management is historically unstable: prone to go charging off after the next "big shiny thing", C-suite rotates every 18 mos or so, proclaims re-invention and forgets everything their predecessor said or did. The staff doesn't forget and has little respect or faith in mgmt.

Since bankruptcy and buyout by holding company, company has been largely rudder-less. Would not recommend employment- not worth the stress and disappointment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company requires a real leader- has had many technically proficient C's, but an effective and charismatic leader is needed.

Company says "our employees are our biggest asset" , but actions undermine the words, credibility not found.

I have been working at Bell and Howell full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have a job. Steady paycheck. Meet some good people. As of now it is not far from home.

    Cons

No advancement, no merit increases, very hard to get training on new equipment. Stuck with problems on machinery I have no knowledge of and very hard to get support at night time from senior technicians so I have to learn everything on the job to the point that my manager thinks I have training and doesn't set me up for it.. Very poor attitude from technicians because of company future causes myself to give up and work on my own to try to make it every week. Only reason I have taken to work the graveyard shift is to save up enough money in my 401K, (which is not helped by Management anymore) so that I can retire on my social security in 8 years and work at a less stressful job. If I was 20 years younger I would have quit by now and gotten a better job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Whats the point? Management hasn't done anything but hire executives and give themselves bonuses every year! What use to be a great company years ago has fallen so low because of decisions made at the higher ups! Like I stated before I just want to do do my job until I can retire and move on.

    Pros

They have multiple location throughout the United States and Canada. They have different shifts to choose from depending on which customer site you work at. Working on the inserting systems is challenging and rewarding.

    Cons

They are struggling financially and have not given any pay increases in 6 years. The cost of your medical insurance is also high averaging $400 a month for a family.

I worked at Bell and Howell

    Pros

Fair pay, little micromanagement, there are a few experienced, committed people who work for them.

    Cons

Very few people have a can do attitude, and pride in their work, it is challenging to get answers/commitment/get work done. Lots of installation issues, product issues. Constant changes in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Apply deeper thought to who and where is the bottleneck. They have been laying off people for years. Too much politics.
