    Pros

Benefits are pretty good. Parking is good. Lots of places to go if you need to get away for lunch (if you are allowed).

    Cons

No advancement for someone who isn't related to someone already in an advanced position or if you don't have a mechanical engineering degree. HR is a joke. If you have any issues they will not be handled appropriately or quietly. Management is slow to praise but very quick to pass the buck as well as the blame. Many managers can't manage and instead of being let go or demoted they are promoted or moved to manage a different angle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step out of your comfort zone and let go those you know can't manage. Embrace those who are true leaders and have great knowledge. Respect those below you and respond to their innovation, as you claim the company is based on innovation. Remember your hourly employees sacrifice a lot with the swing shifts they work.

I have been working at Bemis

    Pros

Its a pay check and has decent benefits. But they will never hire another full time employee only season help and temp workers.

    Cons

Constant policy changes designed to write up and fire as many hourly employees as possible.
    Constant harassment from management.
Now matter what you do or how good you do it it is never enough.
    Unequal treatment between employees.
They hire people to run departments that have no clue about the production process for the department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit changing policies every week. When your employees tell there is a problem listen. Employee morale is important and right now it cant get much lower. Learn to cooperate with the bargaining unit. They are not your enemy but are there to help.

    Pros

Friendly environment. Possible to work there and have a balance between life and work.

    Cons

Not enough career opportunities for women.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide clearer direction on skill sets needed for future advancement opportunities. Do more training for leadership on management skills.

    I worked at Bemis full-time

    Pros

The people were great to work with. Very friendly and welcoming. Fun culture inside and outside of work. The work/life balance was good.

    Cons

Little to do in the Fox Valley area. Below average salary. Below average benefits. 401(k) match was nothing special and vacation package poor. While Bemis offered a stock purchase plan, its benefits were practically non-existent. The packaging market is a commoditizing industry.

From an engineering perspective: All experiments were run on production equipment. The manufacturing/product development relationship was peculiar. It was constantly a battle to run experiments on production equipment due to output concerns at the factories. In my opinion it was not a good strategy for a company with innovation as a core value and a result of upper management bureaucracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Short of moving your facilities, there is little you can do about the Fox Valley location being undesirable for some people. Make the job package itself more desirable to entice people to work (and keep working) for Bemis. Manufacturing and product development need to be able to collaborate effectively.

    I worked at Bemis

    Pros

    Good benefits. Pay is okay.
Some leadership listens some does not. Typical in a big company.
R&D environment seems pretty secluded. Not a lot of interaction.

    Cons

Big company issues. I have been through 2 downsizings with this company. They seem more concerned with Wall Street than the employees.

OK place to work but does not pay as well as other companies.

I have been working at Bemis

    Pros

Challenging work for the self-motivated. Company has grown significantly and has tried to keep the small company feel.

    Cons

Stress of becoming a big company is evident in the working environment. Not always consistent direction from group leaders in job duties.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There appears some disconnects in mid management levels in taking corporate strategic directions and implementing the logistics at lower levels of the organization.

I have been working at Bemis full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Executive management
    Good coworkers
    Safety conscious
    Reasonable work life balance
    Plants are very well run

    Cons

Some middle managers are very poor leaders and micromanagers
Pay significantly lacking, greatly trails the market for similar experience and duties
Not promoting from within. When employees aren't promoted, doesn't that reflect poorly on middle management?
Regular layoffs and plant closings create an environment of always watching your back

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the areas with high turnover, are all of those employees bad or dissatisfied for the same reason?

I worked at Bemis full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The company is growing and hiring a number of engineers and specialists within Research and Development. Very good place to start your career. There's a lot of room to learn, make mistakes and grow.

    Cons

An incredible amount of idle time. Also recently suffers from fairly high turnover of late. The work can also be kind of boring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the benefits. They absolutely need to be better. The tuition assistance is no good. The opportunities to work remotely need to be expanded. Improve the workplace atmosphere to make it more fun.

I have been working at Bemis full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with, decent benefits, 40 hour week for most employees, adequate pay for the area.

    Cons

Not a lot of opportunity for growth, unless you well connected. If you do get a promotion, it will only reflect your title, without change in pay. Poor communication from upper management. Company is behind on innovation side of things.
