I have been working at Benchmark Senior Living full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benchmark truly knows the business of taking care of seniors and is ahead of the game in the industry. The training is extensive and communication on all levels from front line to home office is consistent. There are values set forth to all the associates to work as a team and a family. Benchmark knows that we are in a business of taking care of people and they also want to ensure that they are in turn taking care of the associates

    Cons

Work life balance can be hard as this is a 24/7 business. But the key to taking care of seniors is you have to LOVE what you do, and with that you can balance the workload. Again, this is people taking care of other people who need our help and compassion and with that comes the hard work and dedication that is necessary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication from senior management is great and should definitely remain a focus as all levels of associates at the communities work so hard and recognition certainly goes a long way.

Bottom Line Driven over Care of Residents and no Work/Life Balance

I worked at Benchmark Senior Living full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Hard to find any Pros other than the residents.

    Cons

Work/Life Balance is a joke! Sales Expectations are unrealistic. You are micro-managed, and there are ridiculous #s of meetings and sales reports that are dissected all week long wasting valuable time.
Regional Directors work Monday-Friday but community Directors work either Sundays-Thursdays or Tuesdays to Saturday in order to cover weekends which takes a valuable :business day" off the table and results in a huge disconnect amongst management team Working as a team is an illusion And the back-stabbing is inevitable as everyone is worried about covering their own $$$.
Company claims to want to set you up for success but that is just smoke and mirrors as everyone is so focused on justifying their own job that they will take you down in a second.
You compete for Move Ins with your sister communities and then get marks against you for losing a prospect!
Your input is not welcome especially if against corporate directives which come often with no reality of differences in economies of individual communities.
Chaos and Dissatisfaction abound and everyone is afraid to do or say anything. It is not a fun place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sadly, it seems that Tom Grape is just a figurehead and the company he started and for which many employees said was a great place to work has been taken over by corporate greed. The desire for profit in each community overrides doing the right thing for the residents!! Get rid of split work week schedules for Community Directors unless entire company works this way. then you might understand how ineffective it is for your own job! Start taking a better look at what goes on in each community and Practice what you preach! You will continue to lose great employees who genuinely care about making their communities a great place to live for their residents because you see only numbers and continue to promote unrealistic directives. Better pay for caregivers and you will attract better ones and keep them longer. It is an extremely stressful job and your gratitude grams are nice but do not make up for poor pay!

I have been working at Benchmark Senior Living full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Mostly, Great Residents, lots of activities for the residents and food is great for them

    Cons

not enough on the job training for the amount of residents a CNA covers in a shift. Some CNA's give it a bad reputation. Depending upon your shift- you could be working with prejudice girls that wont help you. They have a policy if you see abuse, report it- but watch out if you do- friends and co-workers take care of each other. You also don't know what floor you're working until you get there, which could pose a problem- the work load per floor is not balanced. Saw CNA's disrespect residents rights.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

train the CNA's yourself-see for yourself. Balance the number of residents with equal share of CNA's on duty- too little staff.

    Cons

    -gossiping managers
    -rampant favoritism
-people terminated based on he said/she said
-red, yellow, green hit list to weed out the undesirable associates
    -backstabbing
-new prospects more important than current residents
-coffee and candor is a joke
-targeting associates that managers don't like
-care based on how much a resident is worth (he is worth x amount of dollars, so make sure we are meeting his needs)
-what happened to Tom Grape's mission statement
-what happened to making it PERSONAL?
    -racially biased company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tom grape and Stephanie Handleson needs to make a surprise visit and listen to the front line associates if you ever want to change the culture.

    Pros

The Residents, and the handful of honest employees.

    Cons

Racial Profiling, Neglect, Not Following Policy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Where should I start,

Don't tell your frontline associates to follow policy when management doesn't do the same.

Open door policy for this facility is open when the Highly Professional Executive Director is ordering 4 tons of Pizza Hut.

Equal Opportunity Employer, No how about racially selected and favored.

Don't tell employees that gossiping can get you fired. But yet they fire people off of gossip.

Those residents go through abuse being shorthanded because the company runs staff throughout the revolving door. There is no integrity here. This company treats honest hardworking employees like trash.

Do not seek employment for this company.

    Deluded Gang Leadership

I worked at Benchmark Senior Living full-time for more than a year

    Pros

None...this company no longer represents what Tom Grape created

    Cons

Where to begin? This company is lead by nicotine gum chewing, diet coke addicted, cigarette smoking leaders from the top down. They talk out of both sides of their mouths about "being kind to residents" when they email, call and abuse all levels of community leaders about "move-in's...move-in's...move-in's" all while we are trying to deliver quality care to residents. Only the gang leaders are promoted and the human resource department is a joke. Somehow the senior leadership has managed to circle the wagons around themselves. The turnover at all levels of the communities is over 100% a year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tom Grape or the investors need to take a hard look at all the senior management and ask how they can lead others with addict personalities and abusive behaviors. Pull phone call records from managers cell phones and emails and see how the messages are at all hours and demanding unrealistic results. They have managed to ruin quality leaders careers in regional leadership trying to protect the community teams from the corporate madness. This is a very deluded team.
