Pros
Overall, nice people to work with
Good benefits
Free lunch in fancy cafeteria everyday
Gorgeous corporate site complete with a stream running through
Policies in place to help improve work/life balance
Cons
Management's main concern is not always making smart investments that will realise great returns
Some employees in very senior positions are kept in these positions even though it is clear that they have no idea what is going on... its just treated like an insider joke..weird
There does not appear to be any method for identifying high potential employees and retain them
Advice to Senior Management
Don't just ignore things that are bad for the business and hope they will go away... take steps to remove these issues and improve the business
There is nothing wrong with making decisions based on ROI. It may not be the only concern but it should at least be a part of the discussion before major investments are made.
Run the business, don't ,let it run you especially the distribution channel.
Pros
A nice facility but that is about it. Company is run by select group of cronies with little to no experience in managing anything.
Cons
Senior level management is concerned with trying to hold onto their jobs. They are not qualified to go any where else. This is widely recognized throughout the organization.
Advice to Senior Management
Clean house.
Pros
Great culture. Good work / life balance. Would have worked with the company for the rest of my life if I could have. They took care of their employees.
Cons
Business is not good right now. Due to the downturn in the economy, the company had to cut some key positions.
Advice to Senior Management
I'm hoping they weighed the positives and negatives of cutting benefits such as free daily lunches prior to laying off loyal employees.
Pros
Benjamin Moore offers a lot of perks to make up for the fact that they pay so little. They provide 4 weeks vacation and free lunch everyday. There is a good sense of community there with sports teams and other activities. Most of the people were great to work with.
Cons
Someone without experience will have to wait a long time to be promoted or gain any recognition at this company. People with Master's degrees were working as lab technicians while I was there making around 35k a year. Needless to say, everybody in that situation has since left the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn the term Price Elasticity of Demand and you won't lose half your business in a down economy. Find ways to challenge younger talent if you want to keep them on board.
Pros
There are a few good reasons to work for Benjamin Moore...
First, most designers and a great deal of painters will agree that Benjamin Moore has the best color selection. When one shops for paint one is actually shopping for COLOR. Paint is just the vehicle that gets the color up there. Though they make a good PAINT too.
Second, they seem to be genuinely onboard with making the "greenest" paint possible with Nutura (sp?)which will be out soon. From what I'm told it will have a recycled can, soybased ink, zero VOC's, and all the colors can be made in it. It will be greenguard & greenseal certified I think. I would like to see a Life Cycle Analysis of the product. I think that's the true "green" or eco-friendly test...but I digress.
Third, It's really easy to sell a product that people come in needing anyway. Most of the people who come in are cool. It's mainly women and paint contractors who tend to be men. The contractors are no nonsense guys who just want a little personal service and a fair price. I give them both and that's why I am successful.
Overall, not a bad place to work...Good product, eco-friendly things in the pipeline, product sells easily, cool clientele.
Cons
There really isn't an opportunity to be upwardly mobile in the retail space working for someone else.
You may become Manager someday, but unless you are in Corporate you are capped for the most part. That's unless you are the store owner and then you are salary-capped only by how much paint is sold. That's assuming you want to own a store. Some people don't and that's O.K. too.
It can be very boring. Especially when sales are slow. This applies to the wintertime and in recession economies when people will delay home improvements, ie., RIGHT NOW. When making paint (or color, excuse me) the day flies by. I just want to be productive all day being . Is that too much to ask?
The pay is mediocre at best.
They just laid off a ton of people in the corporate office. It does not bode well for the humble employee when they are viewed as an expense rather than an asset.
Advice to Senior Management
Give your people more praises AND raises!
Pros
The over all company culture is very people oriented. Training is very positive and support is satisfactory. The products are excellent and well known within the industry. The employees as a whole are company oriented and dedicated to the work environment. Company is very community focused and contributes. Management within at the department level is supportive of advancement and contributes constructive direction. Product is superior at the premium level to any company in the industry. Consumer recognition of brand is very good.
Cons
Senior management has bet the ranch on a failed business plan and unless Berkshire steps in and makes wholesae changes the brand will become only a large regional.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't worry about Berkshire so much and make decisions best for BM.
Pros
Ben moore is a good place to start a career and work your way up to a solid position. they compensate well and train you to become a solid worker who can contribute to a successful product.
Cons
senior management is comprised of many people who do not deserve to be in their positions. many were given their jobs because of their names rather than their accomplishments throughout their careers. because of this many senior managers are ill fitted for the job and cannot do good for the company.
Advice to Senior Management
hire and promote well qualified individuals who are dedicated to the company as a whole instead of themselves. if they do that then they will be a far more successful company.
