I have been working at Bermuda Government full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Because of the laid back mentality, work-life balance is awesome. Pay is good, though lower than the private sector. Get to work on interesting projects and it is great to see your work impact the country.

    Cons

The bad side of the laid back mentality is that it does create an atmosphere of inefficiency in many cases. Some people in the private sector has been told to hate us and are out for blood. They constantly call all civil servants lazy (which is true in some, but not all cases) and say pretty terrible things about us, to the point where it becomes abhorrently prejudice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice would be to find ways to improve on efficiency, encourage those resistant to change to get on board and move to a merit based reward system.

A job that offers plenty of job security at the expense of career advancement.

I have been working at Bermuda Government full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The job has plenty of job security and also offers a fair amount of paid vacation and sick time. There are discounts at certain businesses for members of the Government union.

    Cons

The organization is resistant to change so not for creative types. Suggestions for improvements are generally ignored. Additionally, career advancement is very slow as the many employees spend their careers in the organization so, for the most part, you only have an opportunity to progress when someone retires. Additionally, compensation at the bottom and middle is lower than in an equivalent private sector job and at the higher level there is not enough work to justify the higher pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider flex time and dialogue with employees.

    Pros

Work assignments were varied and you received a broad overview of the organizations operations.

    Cons

Poor communication and leadership of executive management make the department very unproductive. Back stabbing among executive management have created a culture of mistrust among the department.
