    Best Buy at a glance

Senior (Current Employee) Beverly Hills, FL

ProsYou'll meet and work with great people within your department.
It really is a team environment.

ConsManagement doesn't seem to know what they want.
One minute they'll ask you to meet certain criteria and the next minute they'll punish you for meeting the same criteria they just asked you to complete.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of hiring managers externally who go on power trips and don't understand the full rules of the store, why not try to train and promote internally?
A manager whose been properly trained and worked in the store from Day 1 will be more effective than somebody who has experience from a competing name brand.

Great for part-time if you love electronics

Home Solutions Specialist (Former Employee) London, ON (Canada)

ProsBetter than minimum wage pay with benefits you can buy into.
Lots of online training for product knowledge and information about the company and SOP.
At least 2 weeks advanced schedule.

ConsNo way to check your work schedule online.
Everything connected to the internet must be accessed through proxy to HQ in BC so internet can be very slow. Further, the computers the employee's use for checking on inventory, ePOS (point of sales), etc. is heavily outdated and needs major upgrades.
Product is relocated/reorganized so frequently and has multiple locations it is almost impossible to know exactly where they are.

    Pays the bills

Computer Specialist (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

    Pros- Awesome co-workers
    - Some managers are great
    - Laid back environment when store is slow
    - Excellent pay, above average
    - Good customer service experience
    - Good discounts on certain items

Cons- Too much politics thrown around the store
    - Managers have over stepped their boundaries on occasion
    - Pressure to sell service rather than provide good customer service
    - Part-time hours are unpredictable and hard to get
    - Favouritism is trend in some stores with employees

Advice to Senior ManagementI would recommend that upper, middle, and lower management take advice from their employees and help better structure the company. The restructuring of the company has impacted the behaviours of managers to it's employees in a negative way and it needs to change. The key to success with employee and manager relations is to providing what we want and releasing the pressure from sales in a more comfortable way rather than shoving PSP, TPP and geek squad services down customers throats.

"Great People and a fun place to work!"

Merchandise Manager (Former Employee) Burnaby, BC (Canada)

ProsGreat opportunity to grow your career and gain amazing experience in a variety of areas. A strong management team that really tries to make sure every employee is positioned for success. The people really care about the company and they are very results oriented, it was great working with like minded individuals, it really fostered a strong sense of belonging and teamwork.

ConsLeadership can become too involved with micro management which can interfere with your ability to execute your job properly.

    Great while it lasted

Supervisor (Former Employee) Toronto, ON (Canada)

ProsGreat experience, easy promotions if you rub the right shoes.
    Great discounts.
Good benefits for a retail position.
    Great co-workers.
    Flexible hours.

ConsThe higher your position on the ladder, the less of a life you will have outside work.
No training from management as you climb the ladder.
High demands from management, but no instruction.

Advice to Senior ManagementChoose your staff and store managers carefully.

    Experience depends entirely on management

Home Theatre Specialist/Mobile (Current Employee) Toronto, ON (Canada)

ProsDiscount is pretty good (cost + 5%) as well as various employee purchase plans.
    Pay is above average
Laid back environment when the store isn't busy
Can move up in the company if committed

    ConsSelling like you're on commission.
No work/life balance. Your availability must include ~3 weekdays and friday/sat/sun.
    In-store politics
Depending on the location, management can make or break the store.
I have seen favoritism at multiple locations (favored employees are given double standards)
    Job gets tedious and repetitious

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize that some mid-level management (seniors/supervisors) overstep their authority at times.
    Tone down the favoritism.
Be consistent. Some associates can get away with anything while others get disciplined for much less.

    Seasonal Repack associate

Seasonal Repack Associate (Former Employee) Brampton, ON (Canada)

ProsMinimum of three days availability, above average pay, employee discounts at both Futureshop and Bestbuy

ConsHours may not be that great for people who are looking for 'fulltime' work but you could easily work 40+ hours when it approaches the x-mas/holiday shopping season

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
