As With all things there are Pitfalls

    Anonymous Manager (Current Employee)
    Baltimore, MD

ProsSalary tops all others inthe field, benefits, and comraderie of employees. The motto is to have fun whilebeing the best and at times this can be a very fun job.

ConsFavoritism in advancement, problems with upper management "doing 1 thing and saying another." Upper management is not a real presence inthe stores, many deals for promotions happen in a social environment. Recently there has been a huge influx of hiring outsiders rather than promoting from within - somehting that Best buy has always prided itself on. This is a good , stable company but it seems to have taken a wrong turn at the present time.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe promotion should not be abused through favoritism. Feedback should be timely and informative. Upper Management should be a presence in all stores not simply a chosen few. .

A Mostly Satisfied Review With Some Specific Negative Comments

    Wireless Sales Consultant (Current Employee)
    Richfield, MN

ProsThere is so much opportunity to move up within the company. I think that the people that work within Best Buy are very nice and supportive. I also think that the company makes it worth your while to work for the company, they give you so many benefits for working there.

ConsI think one of the downsides with working for Best Buy is that some of the managers don't know how hard the job is some times. They make such hard goals for the area in which I work, even though I'm working hard every day.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think that they should put themselves in our shoes. They should be doing some of the things that they are asking us to do.

Best Buy's Best Benefits in Retail Outweigh the Worst Cons

    Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
    Vienna, VA

ProsThe benefits are great for full-timers (401k, paid vacation, sick hours to use for each paycheck, time and a half for govt holidays worked, paid holidays, stock options, full medical, dental, and optical coverage, and tuition reimbursement), very decent starting pay, management are encouraging and supportive, and almost everyone there likes to joke around and have as much fun as possible on the job, and that includes management. Good as a easy-going part time job for high schoolers or college kids, as well as a great way to advance in the business world for full-timers with flexible schedules.

ConsIf you disagree with management, you get on their bad side pretty quickly, and once you are there, it's nearly impossible to succeed or advance within the company. As many other reviews have also stated, there is obvious favoritism practiced among management. However, as long as you work hard to get things done, be friendly, satisfy the customer needs, and hit your numbers, this will most likely never be a problem. If you are thinking about working at Best Buy full time, you better care about their profit margin.

Advice to Senior ManagementHiring so many new seasonal employees would be great if you used them to work the HOLIDAY hours when the full-time and regular employees will want off to spend with family, and NOT to take away hours needed during the rest of the season.
Also, change the system for customer service's return policy! The fact that the system will let us take back opened items from months outside the return policy if it's opened but not one day outside the return policy if it's unopened? Newsflash: we still make full profit off of unopened items, and take a hit for open box items. That system has to change.

Is Best Buy the "Best Buy" for your retail career?

    Business Technology Specialist (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsFlexible Schedule, Chances to interact with lots of people if thats what you are into.
There are many opportunities to grow. Also Best Buy is one of the few companies that are still doing
okay financially. Leadership expectations are set very high. so if you grow into one of the leadership positions and succeed, you learn very valuable leadership skills.

ConsFavoritism from some managers. You MUST network to move your way up. Not everything is performance based.
Customers get crazy every now and then

Advice to Senior ManagementI don't even know who you are. Take some time to email or speak to the regular employees

Great for a "not too demanding" part-time job.

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)
    Raleigh, NC

ProsGreat environment if you're into electronics. Best Buy is one of the biggest movers in the electronics retail market. The work environment varies from store to store, but customer service is key (at least at my store).

ConsSome problems with consistency of goals and other company policies, but this is mainly on a store level. As of now, I would not say the majority of the problems I have are directly related to any major policy at best buy, more so I would call into account the attitudes of the management of the store. I suppose this could be expected, but those who engage in amicable activities with managers outside of work tend to get the most favor.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs long as stock is kept plentiful and consistent around the holiday season, I have very few complaints regarding Senior Management (provided the question is referencing corporate).

Prosemployee discount is huge. and working around the latest and greatest technology and people who are very knolegable on electronics is also a plus.

Consits a retail store and a corporate pyramid. just like every other retail job.

    Good Experience. Caution Long-term.

    Computer Technician (Former Employee)
    Memphis, TN

ProsThe benefits and opportunities at Best Buy are pretty good. For an hourly employee, you can join their Stock Program and get incredible discounts. You get to meet a lot of different people from a lot of different backgrounds. In addition, Best Buy does a great job at encouraging everyone to work as a "team." They have team meetings everyday before the store opens to make sure everyone is on the same page and aligned with the same goals. The work atmosphere can get hectic, but if you like a fast pace it becomes something to look forward to.

ConsTheir senior leadership seems to be incompetent. Things that happen don't happen for a reason and they don't seem very responsive to their employees requests, etc. The politics/tiers of leadership in Best Buy are thick and never-ending. A lot of bureaucracy. They don't do a lot of recognition for their employees and it is hard to stand out from everyone else.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your people. Know your people. Respond to your people.

Geek Squad - Fine for a part-time job

Geek Squad, Agent (CIA) (Former Employee)
    Gainesville, FL

    ProsGreat employee discount program; Working with a great group;

ConsManagement was very inflexible with schedule changes and availability; The customers are by far the most stressing part. While working in Geek Squad you pretty much just get yelled at all day by others.

Think about working for best buy? Read my review

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Huntington Station, NY

    ProsWell to be really honest.
    1. You will love the people you work with they arre very friendly and helpful when it is needed
    2. Management. Some people in management are awesome when you need to answer any questions that you have if you are confused about what you should do or not do and barely have to Call Human Resources for anythin
    3. Promotions are always good to get when you work hard and show why you are the best so the advice i would like to give is if you want to move up listen to the management that are already implace such as your senior, supervisor etc and they will help you if you want to move up in the company

ConsThe only downside of working at best buy is to have extreme pateince when dealing with customers. Some of them can be really annoying and others are just flat out rude always listen to the customer and make sure your are poite because in the end you are the expert and not them you know what product is good for them. Also Managers like always can be annoying and also sometimes can just leave you high and dry but you have to be the storng one against them and go to them and let them know that you need help. even if they are busy make them listen because they are not only there for the customer but they are there for you too.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease give the associate a hand once in a while and understand when a customer gets on there nerves please help them we all know that this job can be stressful but you also have to give us our feedback such as recongition when it is aplicable
