Pros
Was treated with dignity and respect. Fun place to work. Flexible hours and great employee discount program. I would work for them part time if given the opportunity.
Cons
Was barely able to pay my bills with what I was making there and I didnt have the time to stay around and hope for a promotion.
Advice to Senior Management
Think you are doing an ok job.
Pros
You get to interact with people, get a good employee discount (except with big-ticket items such as HDTV's, etc..) and can move up the ladder a bit if you are a hard worker and know the right people.
Cons
Not flexible with the hours scheduled, management can be quite rude, working as a cashier can be exhausting and some management does not treat staff well.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more corteous and considerate of your employees on the frontline, treat them with respect and you will receive the same.
Pros
There aren't any worthwhile things to say about the company as a whole. You get a decent discount, however they are even slowly making that worse and worse as time goes on. I've personally been with the company for 4 years this August 09'. When I was originally hired the discount was nothing short of amazing. Parents could use it, siblings, your wife/husband, and your children, you could even get away with buying a "gift" for friends. Since then the discount has been limited to simply your significant other and your children. They tried changing the discount to make it even worse than it is now but pulled back when the employees of the company got into an uproar over the change. Which was that you were not allowed to get more than 50% off a single item, so stuff like Dynex, Rocketfish, Insignia, and Init all of Best Buy's brands that are usually around 70-90% off depending on what your buying would now cost employees a insane amount of money. The only other benefit is the ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Program) which gives you a great price on buying Best Buy stock and the money is taken directly from your paycheck each pay period.
Cons
Best Buy doesn't care at all about there employees in the slightest form. All it cares about is making it's money. When you first get hired they talk up how much Best Buy cares about their employees, it is basically just a way of making you feel good about getting hired. Personally I have worked there for 4 years this August 09'. I am still a Part-Time Geek Squad Agent after being promised the world so many times I've finally came to the conclusion I am going no where in the company. I have been promised the Geek Squad Senior position twice by my Supervisor, and both times was told by the management that I was far to "incompetent" to do the job, to later been told both times that I needed to now train the person who actually got hired as senior so they would know how to do their new job properly. I have also been promised full-time three times. Once the one full-time agent spot available was given to a new hire with no certifications, no qualifications, and in the end he got fired because he had no idea what he was doing. The other two times they bought people into the department to free up labor from departments that didn't have it. One time it was someone from the Car-Fi department whose technical background consisted of knowing how to login to MySpace. The other was a employee of Digital Imaging, who didn't know the difference between a CPU and a Hard Drive.
Advice to Senior Management
I have tried to give my management advice on several occasions. While it's usually used I have never received actual credit for it. On more than one occasion I have made a suggestion that I am told won't work and doesn't make sense, only to see it bought up by a manager/supervisor as their "brilliant idea" a month or two later, and then I also have to sit back and watch them get praised by their bosses about how amazing the idea was and how well it's working out. I have told my senior management on more than one occasion why I am unhappy with the company as a whole, and I'm always told they will "take it into consideration"
Pros
They offer a pretty good discount.
Cons
Like any other retail store, you have to deal with BS either from customers or managers. Workers get promoted based on how cool they are with managers, if they are sleeping with them, and finally, if they carry on the role and responsibility for the title they want before they actually get compensated for it. Meaning, you have to take the role of a supervisor and deal with all the crap for like 8 months or so before you even get the opportunity to JOS for the job and even then the title is not secure.
Advice to Senior Management
lead by example.
Pros
Discounts are pretty good on certain things.
Cons
People you work with know nothing.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn your stuff.
Pros
Fun people to work with. Learning about the latest technology. Not having to worry about what i'm going to wear. Friendly atmosphere. Busy on the weekends so time goes by faster. Employee discounts because I save soooo much money on accessories, like cables, memory cards, cases, car audio, just about everything. Health benefits and 401k. The hours aren't that bad (not opened too early and not closed too late). Meeting interesting people that live in the area and making new friends. Being able to climb up the ladder and getting promoted easily then at other places. Everyone is treated equally.
Cons
Annoying cheap customers. Not getting paid enough for the work I do. Not always having the materials I need when I need them.
Advice to Senior Management
Nothing. Just pay me more.
Pros
It is a great place to work if you want to interact with people on a minute by minute basis and get to be able to reap the benefits of having some smart people around you. Most employees at Best Buy are easy to hang out with and are very down to earth. Management did a good job of picking people who will fit well together.
Cons
Some of the people just are not that smart and think they are all that. Management could definitely improve upon training employees across all departments before throwing them into those departments because there are a lack of people. There could also be some type of small rewards/competitions between departments since there is no commission.
Advice to Senior Management
Encourage more interaction between the departments in terms of learning all areas of the store
Pros
Best Buy is a fast-paced environment
Cons
Customer will get on your last nerves
Advice to Senior Management
Ok
Pros
It's great. Great people, caring company, etc.
Cons
Retail sucks hard. The end.
Advice to Senior Management
I am middle management, so it's kind of tough.
Pros
The employee discount is the best.
Cons
Constant mandatory meetings you must attend even on your day off.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat your employees like people, not numbers.
