Pros
Everyone seems the same because of their uniform, open minded employees, fun enviornment, learn alot and keep up to date with all of the latest technology
Cons
Like any other jobs, its a work enviornment so not enough time to really feel comfortable with your surroundings, hard to adapt to the new enviornment of working and having fun without being comfortable in your work while having fun, a little disorgaized in some parts, more communication between supervisors and their employees would improve all parts of the job
Pros
The positive side is that they tend to start you off with more money than most retail jobs. Its also really fun to work there sometimes because the median age of line-levels and managers is 26.
When we performed well we would get parties, food and we even celebrated our anniversary at a bar once- private party.
When you are dealing with good leadership, they really listened to you. And there was always a chance to learn about the business.
Cons
After graduating college, I was desperate to find a job so that i could being to pay back my student loan. Best Buy was the only place that called me back. Hmmm...
Any way for starters, during my interview they asked me what position/department I was interested in going to. I said that I wanted to be a cashier, thinking that it was an easy enough job; particularly since i knew little about computers or gaming systems. They felt that I would be a better match on the salesfloor. I told them that I studied music in college and would enjoy working in the CDs/DVDs department. He agreed and told me that's where I was going.
On the first day of orientation, I'm told that I'll be put in gaming and mp3s. I hated working in that department. Considering my background and lack of knowledge about gaming systems, it was torture. Not to mention having to meet sales goals that were sometimes ridiculous. They later came to the conclusion that i would be a better fit for CDs and DVDS anyway. Like, really?!?
So i lived happily in my department for 8 months. I did merchandising and listened to my favorite music ALL DAY LONG. But then Best Buy signed a contract with another merchandising/distribution company and so we now have people who DON'T work for Best Buy coming in and doing my job 1000 times worse than i did.
So, management had the bright idea of placing me in "Operations" or what I like to call the "Ninth Circle of Hell". Mind you, i had prior experience working a cash register but in my previous job. However, the system is on a whole other planet. Things were so complicated and I knew i was headed for destruction. You get written up for EVERYTHING. Depending on which supervisor you work with that day, some will be nice and try to help you if you are struggling to meet your goals. Others will basically tell you that you suck at your job. And the pressure becomes so intense, it sometimes turns employees on each other.
All i know is that, the manager that initially hired me did me and Thrifting store a favor by not putting me in operations. Why? He knew that I would be miserable and probably quit within a few months. The only reason i haven't left yet, is because i need to pay my bills.
Advice to Senior Management
Use your discretion when placing employees in departments. Your turnover rate wouldn't be so high.
Also promote based on merit not nepotisim
Pros
the pay was decent. it was a fun atmosphere being around electronics and music playing. co workers were cool. diversity.
Cons
closing the store sucked because you had to stay nearly 2 hours after. some customers were annoying. dry sales. turnover in management constantly. management makes bad calls and only cares about sales and not employee well being.
Advice to Senior Management
Consider the circumstances before making irrational judgments and stop moving people with power around the district. you seem to be cold people.
Pros
Benefits were ok but premium were increasing every year. Discount were good especially on the accessories. Some of the co-workers were team players. Good L.P. staff caught alot of shoplifters.
Cons
The training meetings were a waste of time. If you were scheduled to leave at a certain time you always had to wait for a manager to check you out so you always stayed way pass your schedule time. Managers always pass on the customer issues to the associates. Since the store was non commission big sales or small sales, it really didn't matter anyway. Managers were usually at there daily meetings so they were hardly on the sales floor to see what was going on.
Advice to Senior Management
Managers need to get on the floor more often and engage with the customer and there fellow employees because they help them get there bonuses. Stop constantly mention the blue crew bucks at every meeting because the bonus is very small or non existent to the sales associate.
Pros
Learned new technology, products and services offered. Fast growth opportunity, I was promoted and given a raise within the first 3 months of being employed.
Cons
Co-workers aren't micromanged enough, therefore their work ethic isn't up to standard most of the time. For some reason, alot of inside theft went on in the store.
Advice to Senior Management
Train co-workers how to be motivated and inspired to work for Best Buy and maybe they won't steal as much or at all.
Pros
employee discount good but only on small items
Cons
hard to get promoted, have to be a favoritew person to mngt
Advice to Senior Management
cut out the foolishness
Pros
Good training material, Somewhat flexible with hours, and opportunities to work in different areas of the company.
Cons
Hard to take time off, and Favoritism.
Pros
The employee discount is a great perk
They can work with your school and other work schedule.
They have a very friendly co-workers.
Cons
The mangers are overbearing.
The hours are long with minimal breaks.
They have a horrible sales floor organization system.
They leave the Loss Prevention agents in the front of the store with no relief for hours upon hours.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more respectable to employees needs.
Stop putting so much emphasis on customers to the point that it compromises the employees.
Organize the sales floor better, so when it time to close it much more efficient. There is to much time spent wandering around the store looking for where a product goes.
Pros
the discount is enough to sell your soul.
Cons
uneducated management makes working there very difficult.
Advice to Senior Management
Would a college degree really be too much to ask?
Pros
A great deal of information can be learned about the electronics industry, just working for best buy. Brand representatives and executives always come in and observe how their product is fairing in the market. No commission for sales, so you better just helping the customer instead of just selling product.
Cons
I good education of the products must be learned on your own. It makes selling difficult if an actual product engineer ask you questions because they expect a lot from a best buy representative.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the great work, in staying active with employees
