Pros
Results only work environment - ROWE
Many opportunities to grow within your career
Great people
Cons
no set training for position when you first start
Advice to Senior Management
create some type of training for new employees that is specific to their jobs, not just new hire orientation.
Pros
The people at the corporate office are great to work with and will go out of their way to welcome and educate new hires at all levels. Best Buy is constantly evolving to stay ahead. New design leader is an awesome needed addition to help change inside the company.
Cons
Constant change leads to very tight and unfortunate timelines for design team. Business drives everything and sometimes forces poor discision making by leadership to appease CE vendor community.
Advice to Senior Management
Really need to do something now with cloud based retail for media. You have run this business in the ground by not making good decisions in the past with Napster and Cinema Now. Best Buy should be a leader in this arena driving traffic to the website, but it is like Best Buy doesn't exist. You need a design driven process culture and a well tenured leader in this area.
Pros
Fun People, Decent Hours, Flexibility, 4 weeks vacation.
Cons
Management, Pay, Commission Structure, Management, Management. Promise of $$ never comes and sooner or later everyone gets wise and leaves. They know just where to put your quota so you never get paid. 90% of the sales force makes base and thats it.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop putting the problems of the company's business plan on your sales force. Invest in systems that work. Allow your sellers to SELL! Did i mention fix your systems. Stop lying to yourselves and your stock holders...
Pros
The culture is great - respectful of people, open communication, great work-life balance. Lots of opportunities to connect with others. Learning and development is encouraged.
Cons
Once you get "pegged" in a certain field it is difficult to move out into a different field. The top leaders are too easily swayed into making poor decisions for the company and try to be something for for everyone (which means they have lost their focus).
Advice to Senior Management
Stick with a strategy and a vision. Create a strong domestic reputation before you move internationally. Go back to being "the latest and greatest" rather than the "good follower".
Pros
The benefits and paid time off are good; main campus facility is top notch; some people are allowed to work from home
Cons
Poor compensation; way too much management; lack of opportunity unless you know someone; IT is subpar and there are issues almost daily; lack of ethics and accountability
Pros
If you work hard, you'll be recognized and rewarded. Dedicated and motivated employees move fast in their careers at Best Buy.
Cons
Salary isn't as competitive, but if you prefer a more flexible work/life balance, consider that the trade off.
Pros
Flexible time off via the Results Oriented Work Environment (ROWE) program, competent management, exciting products (TV's, Gaming, Movies, Music, etc...), good compensation & benefits
Cons
Chaotic atmosphere doesn't work for everyone. Changing demands and timelines can be frustrating.
Advice to Senior Management
I think many areas would benefit from better training and development, i.e. a Merchant Development program that would allow for transitions between Finance and the Merchant organization
Pros
The best reason to work at Best Buy is definitely the Discount
also there are Nice employees,Clean Offices, and Advancement opportunities
Cons
Best Buy is Such a big company that there is alot of misinformation and alot of pissed off customers
too many 3rd party contractors
Such a big company you dont have a voice
Advice to Senior Management
Advice I would give to the management is to listen more to the people on the front line and get company wide information out as quickly as possible
Pros
Looks good on the resume. Great experience if you're fresh out of college. Movement is generally encouraged. Flexible work schedule.
Cons
Pay is way low compared to other companies of similar size. Employees can get lost in the shuffle. Layoffs almost every other year.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay for experienced professionals. BBY is wasting it's time training fresh college grads who then leave when they realize pay is better elsewhere.
Pros
Corporate discounts on products
Ability to experiment with new concepts (using local stores as a "live" laboratory)
Cons
Regionalism / Provincialism
Organizational and strategic changes are long and laborious
