    Changing for the better

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsHuge appetite to change and shrug off some of the complacency of the past. Recognition that it operates in an incredibly tough and competitive market, and that only the fittest will survive. Growing a culture of continuous improvement and excellence. Truly international company with an engaged workforce in London, Dublin, Portugal, Gibralta, Malta, Romania and the US, as well as many other locaitons.

ConsThere's so much to do that it is not easy to tell what is most important. Needs very clear direction from the top to make sure the right priorities are established.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to share the vision for the company with the employees in as much detail as possible. Don't assume they aren't interested - there is a real thirst to know how Betfair will win.

Sold its soul when floated and turned staff into robots

    Market Operator (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsLots of great, committed people in my department creating very friendly atmostphere.
Getting the days off/shifts you wanted (within reason) was generally fairly easy as long you planned ahead.
Relaxed policies towards internet use and watching sport/television in office helped create a relaxed atmosphere and made quiet periods more enjoyable.

ConsUnsocialble hours with absolutely no reward for working them. Working Xmas day didn't even get time and a half.

Career progression/promotion is totally unfair and based on location and making sure the department flow chart doesn't get messed up. Because my department had a group of loyal people who stayed for 8-10 years, very few positions to get promoted opened up in the London office. Instead of changing the flow-chart they decided to let some brilliant, talented staff be held in their starting role and wasted for 5-10 years while someone could join the Stevenage office and get promoted to team lead within months simply because the flow-chart opened up in that office.

The market management console got outdated very quicky and upgrades were woefully slow in coming. If there was a workaround then according to managment it didn't need upgrading, even if it meant a task which should take seconds could take an hour.

Had fabulous staff events when I started in 2003, summer & Xmas parties, all you can drink racedays/golf days, after work drinks/parties for individual departments. Pretty much all of these disappeared as time went on to the point where they didn't even have a Xmas party the year before I left.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetfair was the one company in the gambling industry with a genuine unique selling point. Now it's just becoming another dime-a-dozen sportsbook. Floatation came and as a result staff came last in their concerns, it was all about satisfing the shareholders. Slashing the workforce and pay rates so that Betfair fell into line with industry standards means loyalty and satisfaction amongst staff was gone by the time I left.

Great place to work, pity about the redundancies

    Software Developer (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsIt's commitment to continuous delivery, automated testing and other processes that make a software engineer happy, like fast-paced agile process and code quality standards.

ConsThere were redundancies of 10% of IT after my first year working there, during which they asserted that next year there would not be any more redundancies. Next year there were redundancies of 50% of IT. A lot of work is moving to Romania and Portugal now. The company had some great people working for it that now work elsewhere.

Have more respect for yourself than working for Betfair.

    Promotions Team (Current Employee)
    Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

ProsYour next job will seem like a breeze.

ConsTop heavy. No organisation or structure had three team changes in 4 months. A lot of bullying and back stabbing. Expected to work crazy hours for minimal reward. Turnover of staff is ridiculously high. The whole fun place to work is a complete joke, especially when your manager is harassing you at night and days off with emails and phone calls. Pity I seen the ladder for growth get taken up the minute you join. The product they offer is below par against any of the main players.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the fat and stop looking down your noses a the people on the frontline.

    We are shrinking....

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Msida (Malta)

ProsVery friendly environment, competitive salaries for current company's size.

ConsThe company is shrinking day by day, lack of communication and empathy from management, micromanagement, lack of opportunities, too many meetings and too many people involved for minor decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop pretending that you care for the employees and take actions proving it. Give more opportunities, stop micromanaging.

    No value placed on employees

    Sports Trading (Current Employee)
    Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

ProsCan watch live sport, reasonably relaxed atmosphere, free tea/coffee, everyone has interest in sport. Career progression is Ok, there are opportunities, just don't expect to get the financial reward that you deserve.

ConsVery poor morale. Extremely low wages, very poor communication from middle level management. Not very flexible when dealing with the anti social hours you are required to work. Don't even bother introducing new employees to their new workmates. Experienced members of staff dont bother introducing themselves to the new employees even when they need their help with a project/task. Pretty poor training and performance feedback also despite some effort made to standardise it, what they say and what happens

Advice to Senior ManagementThe low wages/ high staff turnover policy won't work forever.

It was very short as Betfair was going through a period of downsizing

    CRM Manager (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsThe people where quite friendly and the culture is relaxed.

ConsDuring the specific period, I felt there was no clear structure or career path. Also there was a lack of communication between upper management and the rest of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to empower people, share your plans and vision in a clear and honest way.
