    Cons

    - Social activities per team and per department are missing

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

The pay is good, benefits are decent and the Hammersmith building is by the water, so if you ever get the time you can take a stroll down the Thames. There's also a ping pong table and beer Fridays which are great. Oh, and there's also a subsidized canteen where you can get a decent meal on the cheap.

    Cons

The company lacks strategy and has poor leadership and middle management. Because of that everybody's pulling in different directions and one team has no idea what the others are doing or they don't care. The company lacks focus. They want to do too many things at once and because of this projects advance very slowly have lots of dependencies and a lot of times they end up half baked or abandoned. So next person who touches that will most likely break something because there are no processes in place and nothing gets documented. There is a very high turnover, and even people at the top leave very fast or disappear over night ;) This causes major knowledge and ownership issues, and it's one of the main reasons why middle management is so poor. There is high pressure to deliver and because of this people pass the buck over email all the time just to give the impression that they've done something. You end up with tens and hundreds of emails in your inbox every day but 99% of them are just noise or deflecting problems, with no real desire to take ownership or actually fix something that's broken. The company does performance reviews every 3 months, which can get political and have very little to do with what you've delivered in the past period. Instead of helping people get better at their job and creating achievable goals, the reviews put useless pressure on employees and allow the managers to be manipulative and perform subjective reviews. I would say don't get a job here unless you're one of the people who just like to pass the buck and then complain about things not getting done :)

    Advice to Management

Focus on fewer things and actually have a single strategy in place for beating Paddy or bet365. Make sure that it's communicated and that every employee lives and dies by that strategy and that all projects align to a common set of goals. Create a company culture that's based on bringing value and not on speed. There's a huge difference between speed and pace. As it is between shooting an email and actually doing something.

    Pros

I worked in Malta on the Arcade, Exchange Games and the online casino, with the odd trip to Hammersmith. If you get the opportunity to work in Malta, grasp it, because for me it is an even better office life than Hammersmith. The culture of Betfair is very relaxed but also hardworking and committed. If you like sport, punting and a bit of 'banter' - Betfair is the place. The core exchange remains an unbeatable product and it is difficult to see how another company can challenge Betfair's domination of exchange betting.

    Cons

The worst idea that come to the fore in my time was that the company was 'technology led', largely because of its huge internal 'engineering' team. This seemed a ruse to grant techies more power in making commercial decisions. Of course any biz should be customer led.

    Pros

Personal Improvement & Development is central to Betfair's employee engagement targets.

    Cons

The staff is rather underpaid when considering the workload and skills involved.

    Advice to Management

This is a corporate environment, but transparency in decision-making can still be improved.

    Pros

Good level of pay, overtime is always available without being forced at all, the office vibe is brilliant, all the managers are one of the boys and the location of the office is handy for those who commute.

    Cons

The only one that really springs to mind is that utilities such as the phone system, and the programme for viewing and distributing the rota seem to undergo dubious changes every-so-often, although, having said that, this is probably more down to contractual reasons than choice.

    Advice to Management

Pick a system and stick with it! However, you are doing a brilliant job at glamming up a role that involves being shouted at down the phone a lot, and creating a fantastic atmosphere that makes you want to come in every day and argue with customers!

    Pros

    Bupa health care Nice office

    Cons

Managers have no time for their staff, and undervalue them. Have to work a large number of weekends. To get a promotion you need to be very chummy with the boss, or you dont stand a chance.

    Advice to Management

Look after your best staff, don't treat them as poorly as you have, or they will continue to leave and the high turnover of staff will continue.

    Pros

The pay and benefits are excellent, the vast majority of people here are great to work with, the business is making huge amounts of money and is growing well, the Hammersmith office is a nice place to work.

    Cons

There is a deeply engrained culture of never planning ahead and leaving everything to the last minute, everything is always rushed and this causes high stress and a low quality of work across the business. Management do not act on advice given (repeatedly) to them and there is no accountability. The staff attrition rate in Betfair is breathtaking, the vast majority of those I have worked with haven't lasted longer than 18 months. HR used to review this once a year, they have now had to step this up to four times a year because of the sheer amount of people leaving, this should speak volumes to anyone considering becoming an employee.

    Advice to Management

Provide strong leadership and a real strategy for planning projects. Trust your staff and do not overrule their advice for petty political reasons.

    Pros

Open plan modern work environment Sports coverage throughout the office Autonomy of work, as a product manager I was able to define and deliver work with a close knit dev team.

    Cons

Staff retention Internal employees not considered for senior roles, external candidates preferred.

    Advice to Management

Encourage internal promotions rather than employing external candidates. In my opinion it will improve staff retention as individuals will see that peers are promoted based on work ethic and success and not overlooked for external candidates that do not understand the intricacies of the business/industry.

    Pros

I've worked in a lot of companies and Betfair is the best company that I've ever worked in. My team and colleagues in general are smart, enthusiastic and good friends, they're not simply just (colleagues). We have a great bond and that's why it pays dividends. My workload can be hectic but that's all a part of working for a fast-paced company. The pay is in-line with the industry (if not slightly better) and the benefits package is better than most companies that I've worked in and know about. The senior management team are experienced and are driving the company in the right direction. There's lots of opportunities to learn and develop.

    Cons

In my first few months, there was a major restructure and it took a while for everything to settle but other than that, there's none. Restructures happen in any large organisation.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.
