I worked at Betfair full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - A lot of excellent staff - Ambitious - Disruptive - GREAT Opportunities - Friendly

    Cons

    - Sometimes trips over itself - Sometimes too ambitious - Could be slow to fix problems but new CEO changed all that

    Advice to Management

    Ensure accountability of everybody

    I worked at Betfair full-time

    Pros

Good benefits and pay Some talented people Decent technological edginess

    Cons

You work with internal frameworks which are badly documented and bring questionable value, just check the 'open source' version of Cougar on github (the documentation is a joke). I didn't like the atmosphere in the office, I felt a lot of power struggle between the managers, constant team reassignment, lack of team spirit. The security concerns can put undesirable pressure on the implementation decisions. Low autonomy as a developer (very difficult to introduce new technologies/practices different then the 'Betfair way') . Basically a top-down culture where architects and managers decide everything. Lack of connection with the business for a developer - you just get a bunch of requirements with no explanation regarding how they bring value to the business or what are the long term plans

    Advice to Management

    Learn some people skills

I have been working at Betfair full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

+ Hard working, clever people. + Friendly environment, everyone is always happy to help! + You won't get bored, as there are so many things to do. However, the environment is quite relaxed, and there is no need to work over-hours. + Interesting challenges for the future. + Stack of technologies is interesting and getting bigger! + You are free to use what OS you want to work with: MacOS, Linux, Windows... + TDD and Agile methodologies. + Developers are involved in full development cycle: design, implementation, integration testing, QA testing, release and maintenance. + Modern offices with green spaces and river views. + Subsidised canteen in the building.

    Cons

+ Some parts of the code are relatively old and hard to maintain/understand and they lack proper testing. However, these bits are being re-implemented with some state of the art frameworks and technologies. + The beginnings can be a bit hard for devs, as they don't have much documentation to read. You will learn while coding!

I have been working at Betfair full-time

    Pros

While very much a gaming company, Betfair is unlike the competition in that it is much more technology / product driven, which makes it a much more interesting place to work. There are new initiatives all the time. Reflecting this, staff who move on (especially the better ones) tend to move to consumer tech companies rather than other bookmakers. Overall quality of the staff is great. Colleagues are focused, motivated and always helpful. Senior team is very strong and the strategy is very clear and well executed. Great to work somewhere that is really thriving. The work environment is great as well. The offices are very nice and constantly getting better, there is a lot of flexibility about working from home etc. with video conferencing widely used for every meeting. Compensation and benefits are very strong.

    Cons

With 6+ offices, there can be a lot of travel depending on the role. The company tries to be data-driven but lacks some basic infrastructure.

    Advice to Management

Sort out EDS so that we really know what data is what for all our reporting and analysis. Have more office activities to make it more of a community).

    Pros

Beautiful location in West London, working with incredibly talented people on an exceptional product, delivering at pace, all in a relaxed sporting environment.

    Cons

Big sporting events can get quite stressful but they do get shown on the big screens in the office with beer and pizza provided

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing

I have been working at Betfair full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Smooth and quick recruitment process, met people from across the business. The company is moving in a great direction, has very competent leadership, and is full of incredibly talented people. You can see the results of the high hiring bar as team members are very smart and passionate about the product, company and culture.

    Cons

The pace is fast but no one makes a secret about that and most people thrive on it.

I have been working at Betfair full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Betfair is a place where people don't just get to talk about implementing new technologies and solutions but they actually put the good ideas and innovation of their staff into practice.

    Cons

It is a supportive but fast moving and demanding environment. If you don't like to innovate, work with the latest technologies and produce results it may not be the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Management really gets technology and has organised the business to facilitate the best possible development and operational practices.
