Pros
2 for $5 dollars for unsold red sox tickets. (then again, who's ever heard of unsold red sox tickets?) If you have a good PI (like I do), then you're pretty much set.
Cons
The 401k contribution is pretty weak (~4%)
Pros
FYI, this does not cover the medical staff and their departments. The best aspects of working in the Facilities are their health benefits and the flexible schedule. We receive really good benefits which help if you go to the doctor often. The hours of work are flexible, which helps with personal life and activities. Working for an institution that improves people’s health is a great feeling, too.
Cons
FYI, this does not cover the medical staff and their departments. The negative aspects of working in Facilities are the financial restrictions and the very slow promotion process. Since it’s a no profit organization, the salaries are lower then the other firms that do the same work in the city. Moving up the corporate ladder is very slow and sometimes impossible. The only way to get promoted sometimes is to get hired into a higher position as a new employee or wait for a senior employee to retire. There is also a lack of training to improve and sharpen employee’s skills.
Advice to Senior Management
I would suggest providing more training for current and new employees on the office protocols and regulations. I would also make it possible for employees to get promoted to other positions without the need for creating new positions.
Pros
Harvard teaching facility, in Longwood Medical Area. Interesting patients.
Cons
Not unionized, staff nurses with over 25+ years are laid off without a second thought.
Due to the lay-offs, most units are left short staffed, and conditions are stressful.
Advice to Senior Management
Too many Directors, and too little support staff. It is a crime how the lay-offs were handled, staff did not receive any respect or dignity for their years of service. Plus other options should have been explored before a major lay-off.
Pros
You can have good wages if you manage to have funding as researcher. But that's it
Cons
If you are a young investigator do not start your career there. No mentoring. Worst place I've ever worked.
Advice to Senior Management
NO leadership. They smile, poly but NO support. You are totally on your own.
Pros
Job is easy, pay is good, and flexibility with shifts is excellent. Most people who work there are very nice.
Cons
Management is hands off, give their work to the lower employees. Don't know their employees value and easily get involved in employee drama. No HR in dept.
Advice to Senior Management
The pharmacy technicians are in need of more leadership such as a lead technician. There needs to be an HR mediator presence in the department.
Pros
BIDMC is indeed the Harvard medical school with a heart. From the beginning, I found myself among colleagues looking to collaborate for the good of the institutions and its patients. The physicians, nurses, and other professionals can go anywhere in the city, or world, to work, but the brightest often come and stay here because of the sense of community, passion, and commitment to patients.
There are always opportunities for growth, to be creative, to point out a problem and help to solve it. Senior leadership is fairly accessible and take the time to understand what is happening on the front lines. The Board leadership is also very dedicated.
The benefits are comparable to other institutions and my management team has been incredibly. helpful to me during difficult times when I needed to take time away from work for personal reasons.
Cons
Faced paced environment can be stressful. Does not offer a lot of tuition assistance ($1500 per calendar year). In certain departments, people get ahead based on who they know, not their skills and contributions (IS in particular).
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to cultivate an open-minded, learning culture.
Pros
treat employees well and good benefits
Cons
minimal annual raises; no general market increases given
Pros
Excellent transparency and communication. Senior leadership had a good rapport with management staff.
Cons
Constant attention to dollars and salaries are not competative at management level.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to hire excellent managers and trust them to manage...
Pros
Robust IT applications to all levels of caregivers, effective communication throughout center, lean but effective staffing, promotion of efficiency and autonomy
Cons
Political environment can be challenging to navigate, Harvard affiliation creates lofty expectations
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work!
Pros
Prestige, working with top level, intelligent people
Cons
Low pay, long hours, good employees not recognized by management
Advice to Senior Management
Give employees the pay, benefits and recognition they deserve.
