    Pros

Competitive compensation, benefits, and work schedule is what Bethesda has to offer. They also have great nurse residency for different specialties.

    Cons

Managers getting at nurses and other employees for everything a patient tells them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advise the employers to keep things professional instead if personal because it hurts the work environment.

    Pros

We work together instead of against each other. The camaraderie we share is one that can never be duplicated anywhere else.

    Cons

The constant changes that are supposedly for the better really aren't. There is not enough raises going around for employees who show exemplary work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Beware of the workplace bully that lives in the endoscopy department.

    Pros

The best benefit would be the cafeteria discount.

    Cons

Since I left in March of 2013, they have hired two other endoscopy nurses and they don't stay. There are a couple of decent people in the endoscopy department, but the rest are backstabbers. Of course the bully and the department manager are friends, so nothing ever gets done about this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage your department and stop playing favorites. Stop allowing your workplace bully to get by with everything under the sun and point fingers in people's faces while you sit across the room and do nothing. You probably also need to corral a certain doctor in and stop allowing him to do the same biopsies on every patient and not allow him to write up all his pathology slips before the procedure even starts. He is breaking many laws across the board. I wrote a detailed exit interview and mailed it in, as I was requested to by HR, and I was never contacted.

    Things are really shaky

I have been working at Bethesda Hospital East

    Pros

The people you work with side by side are wonderful!

    Cons

Management is terrible. No compassion. They never ask the staff what we need, or what could be done to help patients and their care. They just implement new policies one after the other. Around 30 staff members were asked to transfer to other departments because they are closing theirs in order to open another, but now many nurses and staff are just leaving completely. Moral is low right now. Also they do not pay competitively.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask the staff that deal directly with patient care, what would help, and what they need. Catch up to the rest of the hospitals in the area with pay. Without decent money there is no longer any incentive to stay.

I worked at Bethesda Hospital East full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

On site day care, covered parking coverage, decent benefits.

    Cons

The lack of training for management and director levels is scary. Very reactive company that works super lean regardless of employee satisfaction and patient happiness (ie layoffs, mandatory pto, supply freezes, high turnover). This is a place where people in admin. can barely use a computer or know how to read a report. The worse part was those in management that are suppose to "lead by example" were not following the policies and procedures in place. Unless you a RN you will not be treated fairly or have someone put their neck out for you. Extremely poor pay, lack of development and growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

TRAINING!!! Human Resources needs to be a better tool to the organization and to get rid of the bad talent within the organization. Stop working with a skeleton crew and expecting to get great or even good results. If you want better results overall, create a better and efficent team of employees otherwise you get just okay.

    Pros

I received great training for my first RN position. The charge nurses and fellow nurses were extremely helpful. Best first experience I could have hoped for out of school.

    Cons

It's a not for profit hospital so resources, equipment and basic supply items are sometimes in short supply, broken or out dated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better your reasons when making major changes. Your staff's moral is often low and we are made to feel obsolete.
