Pros
Bettis provides a good life and work balance, interesting work, a 9/80 work schedule, and regular hours with minimal overtime. Some positions have plenty of travel if the employee is interested and little or none if the employee does not like travel. The best pro at the Bettis Laboratory is the interesting and challenging work.
Cons
Safety and security at the laboratory is often taken beyond what is constructive and places a large burden on the employees. A lot of time and effort each work week is placed on safety issues such as slips, trips, and falls. Additionally, the sercurity stance has changed from one of mutual respect to a distrust of the employees. Personal electronic devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, and common radio's are no longer allowed at work. Harmless items such as paper and boxes are prohibited from leaving the site. Instead of approaching safety and security in way that involves the employees and encourages them, Bettis management has decided to institute rules that take away common conveniences and damage moral. Engineering work is approached with technical exellence while saftey and security are approached with ease of implimintation and no thought to the consequences.
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to communicate openly with its employees, remove the poorly thought out and often sensless rules, demonstrate trust for the employees, and give the employees a reason to be proud to work at Bettis again. The Bettis environment demonstrates a lack of trust in the employees. If the company is going to succeed in its transition to the next generation of engineers, management needs to engage the employees and demonstrate a culture of mutual respect that accomplishes more than the negative rules.
Pros
pay and benefits are god
Cons
distance to work, poor management, too much control by customer
Advice to Senior Management
talk to employees - learn from them
