I've only been with Bickford for a short time, but the culture and team is great!

    Director (Current Employee)

ProsCulture driven by corporate is true and sincere. Training offered to management is phenomenal!
Staff truly care and have hearts of gold. Everyone has a great heart and truly cares about the residents the serve.

    ConsVery marketing driven.
More staff on duty for higher acuity would be helpful.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease front line staff. Have the RNC be in charge of nursing staff. Utilize the Marketing staff to market and directors to direct at the branch level.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Not enough hours in a shift to do all they expect! Owners GREEDY!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe residents and most employees are great!

ConsNot enough pay for all the work involved! They work staff like slaves. Nurses and CNAs in addition to caring for residents are waitresses, busboys ,dishwashers, housekeepers, do laundry and need to fit in doing activities somehow! More residents moving in but no more staff being hired. Orientation a BIG LIE! The philosophy is supposed to be enriching happiness but reality is work the staff like redheaded step children to enrich the EBY WALLET! Nurses are not to push med cart down hall but are to carry a laptop and 1 persons med cards at a time to each apt in addition to all other jobs listed above UNREAL EXPECTATIONS from this company!!

Advice to Senior ManagementGET A CLUE OR WATCH YOUR COMPANY GO DOWN!!! There are a lot of very nice places for seniors to live these days with appropriate resident to staff ratio!

    grueling

    Director (Current Employee)

Prosthe residents make this job worthwhile. They are the only reason you can keep coming back to this job that sucks the life out of you.

ConsUnderstaffed, owners are greedy and keep changing bonus structure to avoid compensating those who are working the hardest. Sapping the life out of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome educated about marketing. All of the fluff with no meaning is not helpful to families or in the sales process. Appreciate your loyal employees, then maybe they will stay. The "run them like race horses and get rid of them" attitude is clearly hurting your occupancy.

An OK place to work due to the residents that live there.

    CNA (Former Employee) Bourbonnais, IL

ProsInteracting with the residents was the only PRO for me.

ConsManagement has no concept of how much time is needed for CNA's to give good care for assisted residents.

Advice to Senior ManagementShadow ALL staff to get a better idea of how much time CNA's truly need to properly care for residents. Enriching Happiness should be a goal, not just a slogan. Happy staff makes for happy and content residents.

    Much Dysfunction

    Universal Worker (Former Employee)

    ProsSatisfaction of helping the elderly

ConsThey never seem to place competent individuals in management positions. Just any warm body will do. Directors have the ability to accuse and treat employees any way they see fit. This is what happens when immature, unqualified and inexperienced people are put in positions of power. To make matters even worse, upper management obviously doesn't look into the accusations that are made. This company does nothing to retain the few very good employees they have had. They show no appreciation for the hard work done. The top concern for them is keeping the apartments filled and decorating. They can go off on any old whim and get away with it. If they would put as much effort into treating their staff fairly, as they do stroking their own egos, it might be a better place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat is the use to give advice to management? They seem to think they already know it all. But, with that said, I still have to point out that management doesn't have a clue as how to attract, appreciate and retain good help. The problem is with your management choices. Get out of your bubble.

    A stepping stone.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsBickford has a great core value of enriching happiness.

Like any job it is what you make of it.

    Residents .

    I had a great director.

ConsYou will always have a handful of co workers that are negative.

    Communication.

    Pay.

    Branch support.

Team work ( wasn't always there)

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a deeper look. Talk to Lpns, cnas, cmas and kitchen staff. See what works. I understand a lot of heart and work went into the pearl book and bread basket- but needs some tweaking.

Corporate chef needs an assistant to review grove menus and test out recipes. While they can train accounts or other way around.

Thanks for a great job and the experience.

    Unequal employee treatment

Resident Assistant (Former Employee) Portage, MI

ProsThe facility, the work and its residents are decent. The food for the residents are fair. Some of the staff are decent.

ConsThe employees are paid unfairly and unequally. Mind games are played with the employees by facility directors based on who kisses up the facility director more!! The pay range isn't necessarily based on experience or fair or equal! Also some of the staff tend to be very in building a click or being very much two faced!! Additionally some directors believe every thing around them is about them!! They are far to self absorbed to consider every one equally and treat employees equally! The only time any one is treated equally is if they kiss up to facility director! That is also the case with the facility residents!

Advice to Senior ManagementPay every one equally! Don't have facility director who pay you based on who kisses up to them more! Don't have staff who are in click or play favors towards one side or the other!!!

    Better pass on this place...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Overland Park, KS

ProsThe residents! If you don't look too closely, it looks like a very nice place. It has the potential to be something special.

ConsVery high turnover. Very low morale. Inept management. Unrealistic expectations of lower-level employees (i.e., using CNAs for nursing assist, food service and housekeeping duties).

Advice to Senior ManagementI would suggest looking at the mission statement of the original owners. Somewhere down the line, the current owners have completely rearranged the priorities. Such a shame. Word gets out that this place is all about profits. They accept residents that require much more care than the regulations would allow, just to fill up those apts. Do something to raise the morale of the people who work so hard to take care of the residents. Take a good look at your supervisors in this regard.
