Decent place to gain experience, but don't stay long

Manager Trainee (Former Employee)
Lakewood, CA

I worked at Big 5 full-time for more than a year

ProsEasy to get a start without experience, room for merit-based promotion, solid benefits package

ConsHigh employee turnover, lack of investment in employee development, short-sighted business strategy, low wages, often unprofessional atmosphere (despite the fact that male employees are required to wear a shirt and tie).

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in employees and technology to get more out of your staff, and to decrease turnover.

18 years as a Big 5 Manager. Long hours, poor pay, not loyal, high turnover.

Store Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Big 5 full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIf you like sporting goods, you are surrounded by them. Not much other than that.

ConsLong hours, poor pay, not loyal, high turnover. Very low pay especially when you are paying for your own benefits. Store Managers don't even make over 45000 a year. Managers are extremely micro managed, absolutely no say in anything.

Advice to Senior ManagementRegional Manager's are in your store once a year. District Manager's are in your store twice a month. They both micro-manage you through email. Absolutely terrible!!

no place to make a career

Assist Manager (Current Employee)
Las Vegas, NV

I have been working at Big 5 full-time for more than 5 years

Prosdecent starting out first time job

Conslow pay business dress code no set schedules poor life balance bad training

Advice to Senior ManagementUpdate the training to the new century, a training guide written in 1986 is not at all helpful in today's world. Ditch the 1950's dress code, your motto is "selling sporting goods is fun". It's not fun when you're in a dress shirt and tie. Try treating your store managers with respect. Saving a buck at the expense of you employees is bad business.

Great work environment

Cashier (Former Employee)
Palmdale, CA

I worked at Big 5 part-time for more than 5 years

ProsVery much a team environment and everyone gets along really well. Upper management is fantastic and always willing to help out their employees.

ConsRetail in itself is a hard job. Customers, for the most part, aren't that great.
Sometimes management takes a while to give reviews and raises.
