I have been working at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Nice to help others and have an impact. It's fun to see the impact this has on children's lives.

    Cons

Limited budget, and lots of work to get done. If you are task orientated you will hate it, if you are okay with having many ongoing unfinished projects it will work for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Give employees time to rest.

I worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America full-time

    Pros

A mission-driven culture with research-based services that have a positive impact on children. Flexible work hours. Program standards are clear and program staff know when they are performing well. A well-respected brand that people want to support.

    Cons

There is little autonomy in the local offices so each office is strongly affected by the state organization's dysfunction. The organizational culture is capricious; not transparent. Good employees are dismissed and those who are left must absorb their jobs without warning or input. This behavior would normally be driven by financial distress, but not in this case.

I worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

When I started at BBBS NYC there was alot of respect and flexibility. They have good benefits.

    Cons

awful office culture, number driven, not valuing employees, not paying social workers what they should be making.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management is very resistant to feedback, they believe the high turnover of employees is normal and refuse to look inward. There is constant change in practices and policies, making employees feel uneasy. Salaries are below NSAW standards.

I have been working at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I believe in the mission. It is a well run organization, runs like business. There are plenty of training and development opportunities. Flexibility with work schedule.

    Cons

There is not a lot of room for growth. Compensation has been stagnant over the last few years - however, it has been made up with more time off. Some management could use leadership training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to bring in more money so that the hard working staff get paid what they deserve. Programs is where the heart of the organization is and they are the most underpaid.

    Pros

Very good blend of seasoned and fresh talent. The mission statement energizes you to do your personal best. The people genuinely cared about their work.

    Cons

Salary is below standards, but then again, this is common for many nonprofit organizations. Can be a struggle to get budget approvals for new technology or applications.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Monthly director and above meetings to keep everyone informed with current projects and budgets will increase inter departmental collaboration.

I worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The mission of this non-profit is outstanding and something backed up by research. BBBSA truly impacts lives and has a 100+ year history.

    Cons

Finances, as with many non-profits, are a huge challenge. Definitely take time to do your due diligence and make sure you are comfortable with the reality of the situation. Internal communication during a recent major layoff was textbook "what not to do." People were not valued.
