I have been working at Big Heart Pet Brands full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Major positive cultural shifts are happening since breaking off from Del Monte Foods and becoming pet-focused
    - Lots of opportunity - pet industry is on fire
    - Get to work with iconic pet food and treat brands like Milk-Bone, Kibbles 'n Bits, Meow Mix and others
    - Company is expanding it's premium specialty holdings - most recently with acquisition of Natural Balance
    - Focus on innovation and trends is steadily increasing - leading to a more creative and less risk-averse environment - internally people think of the company as a $3 billion start up
    - New values and guiding principles that people take seriously (integrity, courage, action)
    - Supportive leadership team with impressive brand experience
    - Great new giving program, including grants for pet organizations and co will match donations to pet orgs by 150%
    - Downtown SF HQ close to the Ferry Building and with awesome Bay and bridge views
    - Casual - jeans every day
    - Most people seem to be truly passionate about pets
    - If you're the kind of person who wants to compete and win, has initiative and can back it up with smarts, you'll do well

    Cons

    - CPG thinking can sometimes feel limiting and risk-averse but that's changing
    - Employees seem to want change faster than the company may be able to deliver
    - Company tends to have champagne dreams on a beer budget - you need to be creative and scrappy to thrive
    - Future is a little fuzzy being PE-owned. Great opportunities could very well be ahead but this isn't the place for people who need slow, steady and stable to be happy.

    Pros

    Financial District location
    Decent salary CPG
    Great benefits

    Cons

Need great benefits for health problems you will develop
    Good old boy network
Not the right talent in upper management
    Bullies run wild
    No innovation
    No training
No respect for workers in general
Human resources is merely a token

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just sell the company and stop wasting everyone's time. This was by far, on every possible level for a long-standing professional company, the worst company I have ever worked for. Perfect for sociopaths at any level.

Nightmare - The worst company I ever worked for

    Pros

    Summer Fridays (Get off early)
    Casual dress code
    Competitive pay for CPG
    Work-life balance
    FiDi location

    Cons

Politics - Politics at BHP takes it to the next level since it's a private company. People throwing you under the bus? All the time.
Lack of decision-making - Everyone is essentially waiting for the CMO to make the smallest decision. Hence always putting off fires all day.
Low morale - This is the only company I have worked for where people openly interview for a new job at their cubes. Co-workers send you job postings throughout the day.
This Company is only focused on short term goal, which is to be sold to a larger company. There is no long term vision, career development or employee retention effort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys need to get this company together and treat people as human beings.

    Pros

Great brands, good people, the salary is very competitive, summer hours (if you can get your job done on Friday you can leave work at 3pm in the summer).

    Cons

Very financially driven company, finance always has the last word. You have to run to keep up, lots of firedrills and last minute requests. Burn out is high. Not a great organization for sharing and helping others. You are on your own, so good luck!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are lots of very talented people, find a way to nuture them too.

    Pros

Good co-workers and nice, friendly office environment. Competent senior management that set a clear course for the future.

    Cons

If you are in IT in San Francisco, you will find it hard to feel a part of the team back in Pittsburgh and know what is going on strategically. A number of SF team members always felt marginalized and were not treated as equals.

    Pros

People below the Senior Management level are great to work with.

    Cons

The CHRO and CFO have this weird vendetta against the former Del Monte Foods whose Consumer division was sold last February. These two, the CHRO in particular, stomp around and pound their fists like two year olds when they feel their authority is being usurped. Both are extremely reactive and and tend to make decisions based on emotion rather than logic much to the detriment of their respective employee groups rather than thinking of the organization as a whole. The CFO's direct reports are "yes" men which no gumption to stand up for fear of retribution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dave West should replace these two as the morale under both these leaders is extremely low.

    Pros

The work life balance, the location and the co-workers at the bottom layer.

    Cons

This was one of my worst experiences working for a company. The organization is way too top heavy. That aspect compounded with a lack of leaders and decision making agility has caused immense frustration at all lower levels. There's actually not enough meaningful work left at the bottom because we have so many layers that you are effectively demoted as a result of the organizational structure. We are constantly hiring because everyone at the bottom hates their job and leaves. Beware if you think job openings are a sign of growth. We don't operate as winning teams that work together. This is game of thrones corporate edition. If you are looking for good work experience to progress in your career then you should look elsewhere. If you want to be an admin and spellcheck and do edits for your boss come here. The good people all leave...very few stay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The roles and layers of people need to be adjusted. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Have one on ones with people at the bottom and try to understand the view from below....it's quite different than the view from above.

    Pros

Good people, Talented leadership team, fantastic location being close to the water in San Francisco. Pet food business is highly profitable allowing for brand reinvestment.

    Cons

Business strategy and priories changed too often to evaluate if the past strategy was working. The business will continue to evolve being owned by PE. Uncertain what that will mean to the current business culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay the course with initiatives. Being close to right and executing is better than continuous replanning.

    Pros

Smart, collaborative colleagues. Many young working professionals out of MBAs.

    Cons

Too many layers in management. Churns and inefficiency demotivating employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No need to hire expensive consultants to tell the company can delayer and save some salaries. Shift focus and energy to build the bottom, not the top.
