I have been working at Big Lots part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Flexible hours, easy jobs, nice Co workers (for the most part).

    Cons

My head manager sucks, but I guess that's the luck of the draw.
Work you to hard for nearly minimum wage. will start you at a low wage job and move you to a job that is supposed to have a higher pay, but still only give you your low wage that you started with.
Was not trained, I was just "thrown to the wolves", even though they knew this was my first job and that I had no experience. Then everyone got mad because I didn't know what I was doing.
Seems like no one cares about you. You work holidays and stay open until 11-12 on and around Thanksgiving and christmas.
Seems like management could care less about you or what happens as long as they are getting paid.
All in all i absolutely hate my job most days and enjoy it to little due to management mostly. This is just my location though...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give better pay!!!! Important holidays off please!! Pretend to care. HQ should look into management more, they barely even come around.

I worked at Big Lots full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

If your team is on board you can write a very good work life sch.

    Cons

Corp wants outstanding customer service and to look like a Yonkers. But they give you the payroll budget of a convenience store. Then they always change the plan weekly, daily without support to make it happen. Sub min wage to hire staff, makes it hard to recruit and keep trained associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real with payroll hours and raise the min wage to be higher.

Enjoy working here but the amount of hours you get are ridiculous!

I have been working at Big Lots part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The 20% employee discount is wonderful!

    Cons

I put down available for ANY hours and get weekend evenings and Sunday's only! I've never been late, have never called in sick, come in last minute when they're in a bind and never off on the cash registers. Yet... I'm down to 4-8 hours a week while I keep seeing new employees that get more hours than I do. There was never any real training on the cash registers and part of the job is cleaning the disgusting bathrooms with never any cleaning supplies available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to train new employee properly. Be fair when giving out hours to employees.

I have been working at Big Lots

    Pros

the hourly associates are good. They are the 90% that are struggling. But they work hard. Company is trying to improve image and doing upgrades.

    Cons

Most companies struggle with communication but at big lots it is very bad. From store level to corporate. They continue to close stores. Management is not friendly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Greet associates in your stores and improve internal guest service.

I worked at Big Lots part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Enjoyed working there while I was going to school. Managers were very flexible when it came to making my schedule for my classes.

    Cons

Some coworkers didn't care to sit around and watch you while you work but I guess you will find that at any job. It's almost impossible to get terminated from big lots because of the step program they have to go through to be fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to weed out the individuals who do nothing but sit around.
