    Pros

CEO was hands off. Liked to stay in office. Former owners were the key to the culture. Once company was sold off to investors the Berkley Emeryville mentality was lost. The beauty of a BigFix was selling the culture and purity of honest caring about the endpoint security needs of our clients. Working hands on with Big Pharma, Government/large end user needs help expand BigFix into growth. BigFix cared about its clientele. Sales teams always delivered what customers needed. Once bought by IBM all was lost. Marketing VPs were crap. Sales never had a true leader. The product was the true PRO!

    Advice to Management

True leaders are hard to find. Women can lead and sell too.

I worked at BigFix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Truly superior technology. Made competitors look laughably incompetent. Management said they valued out-of-the-box thinking and actually meant it.

    Cons

Growth brought talent dilution and complex politics. Kissinger's law ("Academic politics is so vicious because there is so little at stake.") kicked in. CEO couldn't hire a sales VP to save his life. Company bought by IBM mostly to kill it. Emeryville has its charms, but logistical accessibility (i.e. decent BART connection) isn't one of them.

    Advice to Management

The company as such no longer exists. So much of the comments here are moot.

I worked at BigFix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - fast paced work in small teams - worked on relevant products that competed against much larger companies

    Cons

    - there wasn't much going on in terms of career development - there were definitely cliques among certain senior employees that alienated newer folks

I worked at BigFix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Brightest group of technical people I have ever worked with. Tight knit group. Ability to challenge the status quo.

    Cons

The IBM acquisition was great in many ways, but some of the key talent left following the acquisition.

    Advice to Management

Give the BigFix team the space to do what it does best -innovate.

I worked at BigFix as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company was expanding its product lines at that time. The support/sale/eng teams were in close collaboration to pushing the business forward. There were frequent brownbag events for cross-team technical discussion. And the people are super friendly.

    Cons

The product team needs to work overtime periodically due to the time-sensitivity of security products. Bottom-line: people work happy.

    Cons

Now part of a much larger organization (IBM).

    Pros

Good technology. Decent building and facilities. Excellent customer support and internal IT crew. Generally smart people. Decent compensation. Accessible management

    Cons

Cliqueish and political atmosphere. Management could not hire a sales VP to save its life. Didn't seem to get that products have lifecycles. Much excitement for a "new" product, but little sense on how to maintain or develop it going forward.

    Advice to Management

The old BigFix is gone, but culture can persist.
