Pros
This is one of the most beautiful places in the country to be employed. It was a joy to drive in each day. I felt that management did a good job for the most part and tried to look out for the best interest of its employees.
It was fun to work at a place where you are insuring that others have a good time.
Cons
While I thought my salary was adequate, I felt that some of the positions were underpaid.
Pros
Flexibility, great co-workers, wonderful systems in place for employees to benefit from both personally and professionally. Managers that care.
Cons
Seasonality (expected), short shifts sometimes (as little as four hours) - it is sometimes not worth the gas to work.
Advice to Senior Management
Ensure all outlets are run with the same incentive & operating systems. Some are not run as well as others.
Pros
Biltmore is a very unique place to work. It is one of the most beautiful properties in the country. Overall the company philosophy and standards are very high. I feel the company really does care about the employees and the community. There are a lot of perks working for the company. We get free tickets to the estate and other attractions in the Blue Ridge Mountain community.
Cons
There is a lot of politics in some of the departments. It's hard getting weekends and holidays off. You have always be in a "good mood" even when you are having a bad day.
Advice to Senior Management
I wish work and family time were more balanced. Keeping track of every mistake and only hearing negative feed back really wears on a person. I wish some of the positive things that happen throughout the month would balance out the negative feedback.
Pros
Care and concerns of employee's, personal and work related.
Cons
Hour consistency, but they have to deal with a seasonal operation, so it is understood.
Advice to Senior Management
Just keep building on great leadership!
Pros
Beautiful... fun... nice employee discounts...The only place I know where everyone is going to have fun... People are there to play and enjoy themselves, we get to help them have a blast. There are a wide variety of positions and it is easy to flex between one department and another to do a variety of things and make hours. Everyone there seems to be very good at working together to make the entire place successful and not just their own department
Cons
work days not always long enough to justify gas to drive in for work. The new uniforms and all going as far as pants. I buy mine at goodwill and they are the right colour. I prefer if we were to get small inceremental raises and more hours versus the company spending on in consquentials. Just my own opinion. It was sort of hard to find the downside, although I must say if I were looking for management and advancement of this nature I do not percieve where this really exists, but I am not looking for this....
Advice to Senior Management
Find a way for scheduling where when coming in there are four hrs. Anything less, it costs more to come into work than is made being there. Thanks~
Pros
If you love guest services, its wonderful. I love all the people I meet everyday and getting to help them enjoy themselves. Very busy and lots to do.
Cons
Things change without thought to how the changes will effect the job, the guest or how we get to interact with them. Anything that goes wrong gets a knee jerk reaction.
Advice to Senior Management
Think changes through before they are put into effect. Talk to the people who who IN the job/location you are planning to change not just the managment there. Everyone wants good changes, no one wants constant change.
Pros
great front line team, Desire for high goals and perfection, Owned by folks that live where they work. guests with real money (not pretending to have money and complaining about little things to get things for free) are very well behaved. Wedding season is easy on the eyes all around. great surroundings. Usually communication is fair and balanced for the front line employees
Cons
Inn's Leadership team is getting too big for thier britches. GM likes to hire to a specific 'look' for all front line positions. Expectations of middle managers is in contrast to what they preach to thier front line staff. upper level managers are motivated by bonus plan that rewards low turnover so they cheat the turnover game.
Advice to Senior Management
Take less LT trips off property and focus on what you have on the estate. Be real when interacting with front line staff, not just taking notes to comment on the next meeting with supervisors on what the front line staff is doing wrong. Time for some people to move on on Leadership Team.
Pros
Employee-centric and highly supportive. Management has gone out of their way to keep employees informed and employed during tough times. Salaries seem on par for the Asheville area.
Cons
I can't think of any. Sure, I'd like the ability to move up faster, but it's a tough market for everyone. It's not any better anywhere else. Training funds have been lacking for several years.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work. We believe in you.
Pros
Prestige, unconventional benefits, and stability
Cons
Do not care about their co-workers or employees, distance, and lack of professional growth
Advice to Senior Management
The best means to success is through your employees. Put your employees before the bottom line.
Pros
The people here are wonderful, truly nice people from the Executive Committee to the front line staff. The managers are understanding and very competent. What all the departments are doing is very progressive and really ahead of many other attractions. Leadership is honest and open and really care about the people that work here. It is great to be part of a meaningful mission as well - helping to preserve Biltmore is a wonderful objective for a for-profit company. The benefits are good too, and quite fair. People stay at this company for a long time, and with good reason.
Cons
It is a very bottom-heavy organization - not a lot of place to go. You could very easily stay here for years and years in the same position. In fact a lot of employees are doing that.
Some of the benefits are bit odd - you don't get holidays for your first 120 days and you don't get paid vacation for a full year - and then it's only 10 days a year. The on the job training can be somewhat spotty and nearly everything about how much you'll like your job will vary based on what area you're working in.
Advice to Senior Management
Nothing, you're doing great.
